Vacancies in The Legal Education Appeals Tribunal
 
The Legal Education Appeals Tribunal is established under the Legal Education Act, 2012. 

The Tribunal’s jurisdiction is to determine appeals made by any party or reference made by the Council of Legal Education or by any Committee or officer of the Council on any matter relating to the Legal Education Act 2012.

Pursuant to Section 29(1) and (2) of the Legal Education Act, 2012 the Judicial Service Commission of Kenya invites applications from qualified persons
 for the following positions:-
 
1. Chairperson of The Legal Education Appeals Tribunal 

(1 Post)
 
Ref: V/No. 1/2013
 
Terms of Service: Six years (part-time and non-renewable)
 
Duties and Responsibilities:-
 
The Chairperson of the Legal Education Appeals Tribunal shall be responsible for:-
  1. presiding over all proceedings where he/she is present in person;
  2. participating in hearing and determination of all appeals which come before the Tribunal;
  3. carrying out inquiry into the appeals lodged including summoning witnesses, taking evidence and calling for production of books and other documents;
  4. making finding thereupon and notifying parties concerned of the awards, judgements, orders, rulings and decrees issued by the Tribunal;
  5. making rules of the Tribunal with respect to the filing, hearing and disposal of appeals and other matters before the tribunal; and
  6. providing requisite leadership to ensure the Tribunal attains a high level ofcompetitiveness and ethical standards in its entire programmes.
Requirements for appointment:-
 
For appointment to this position, an applicant must be in possession of the following qualifications:-
  1. be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya of not less than ten years standing; or
  2. have had at least ten years experience in the field of legal education or as a distinguished academic in law; and
  3. meet the requirements set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
2. Members of The Legal Education Appeals Tribunal

Terms of Service: Six years (part-time and non-renewable)
 
Duties and Responsibilities:-
 
The Members of the Legal Education Appeals Tribunal shall be responsible for:-
  1. participating in hearing and determination of all appeals which come before the Tribunal;
  2. carrying out inquiry into the appeals lodged including summoning witnesses, taking evidence and calling for production of books and other documents;
  3. making finding thereupon and notifying parties concerned of the awards, judgements, orders, rulings and decrees issued by the Tribunal;
  4. making rules of the Tribunal with respect to the filing, hearing and disposal of appeals and other matters before the tribunal; and
  5. providing requisite leadership to ensure the Tribunal attains a high level of competiveness and ethical standards in its entire programmes.
Requirements for appointment:-
 
Category I (1 post)
 
For appointment to this position, an applicant must be in possession of the following qualifications:-
  1. be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya of at least seven years standing or a person with at least ten years experience in the field of legal education or as a distinguished academic in law; and
  2. meet the requirements set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
Category II (3 posts)
 
For appointment to this position, an applicant must be in possession of the following qualifications:-
  1. demonstrated competence in the field of legal education; and
  2. meet the requirements set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
3. Registrar of the Legal Education Appeals Tribunal
 
(1 Post)

Terms of Service: Five years contract (part-time, non-renewable)
 
Duties and Responsibilities:-
 
The Registrar of the Legal Education Appeals Tribunal shall be responsible for:-
  1. coordinating and managing the affairs of the Tribunal;
  2. driving the Tribunal’s vision and mission through the implementation of its Programmes and Plans;
  3. mobilizing and managing the resources of the Tribunal to achieve its core mandate;
  4. preparing the Tribunal’s Annual Plans and Estimates;
  5. overseeing financial and administrative management of the Tribunal;
  6. ensuring financial reporting & accountability in accordance with the law, GoK procedures and guidelines;
  7. providing requisite leadership to ensure the Tribunal attains a high level of competitiveness and ethical standards in its entire programmes;
  8. causing to be kept records of the proceedings and minutes of the meetings of the Tribunal and such other records as the Tribunal may direct;
  9. ensuring the publication of the decisions of the tribunal; and
  10. undertaking any duties assigned by the Court.
Requirements for appointment:-
 
For appointment to this position, an applicant must be in possession of the following qualifications:-
  1.  hold a law degree from a recognized university, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with five (5) years experience; and
  2.  meet the requirements set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
