Project Officer for the ‘Extending Fairtrade Gold to Africa Project’
Duty Station: Migori, Kenya
Background: Solidaridad is an
international network organization consisting of nine regional expertise
centres located around the world, each with their own specific expertise and
focus. Solidaridad Eastern and Central Expertise Centre (SECAEC) is one of
them.
SECAEC
producer support activities covers seven countries in East & Central Africa
– Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and
Uganda.
Solidaridad envisions a world in which all we produce, and all we consume can sustain us while respecting the planet, each other and the next generations.

bring together supply chain actors and engage them in innovative solutions to
improve production, ensuring the transition to a sustainable and inclusive

Scope of the Project
Scope of the Project
The
Fairtrade Gold Programme’s theory of change (ToC) is anchored in four connected
strategies to address the systematic problems facing the sector:

Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Organizations Capital Financing

Strengthening Financial and Institutional Capacity
3.
Facilitating the route to International gold markets
4.
Policy engagement and advocacy for Artisanal and Small Scale

Job
Description: Reporting
to the Regional Program Manager - Gold, the Project Officer is responsible for
ensuring that the project beneficiaries benefit fully from the project
interventions.
Responsibilities
1.
Profile the best mining practices and technologies used by the
groups and identify needs and training gaps within the groups through
Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA);
2.
Working closely with the program manager, develop training
curriculum and materials with respect to the training needs and gaps
identified;
3.
Conduct actual training to the project beneficiaries as per the
curriculum and training needs identified. Further, introduce appropriate mining
techniques for improved safety and efficiency within the mining groups;
4.
Support the project beneficiaries to implement, achieve and
maintain Fairtrade certification;
5.
Support building of partnerships between the participating
mining groups, the government and the private sector;
6.
Support peer-to-peer learning among the mining groups and other
Fairtrade certified producers;
7.
Monitoring project progress against planned activities,
preparing progress reports, and liaising with key stakeholders;
8.
The post holder will be working in a developing environment and
he/she will therefore be expected to undertake other appropriate duties as
required for the effective operation of the project.
9.
Any other duty in the program as may be instructed by the
program manager.
Candidate
profile
If you
are inspired by the job and responsibilities as described above, and you
recognize yourself in the following:
1.
A university graduate preferably in geological studies, project
management, political or social science, environmental management or any other
related course;
2.
Proven work experience in development projects, working with
community based informal and formal groups, voluntary certification standards;
3.
Good knowledge of the artisanal and small scale mining sub
sector in Kenya, East Africa or a related field;
4.
Has the ability to plan and manage project-based
work-administrative, organizational and operational project work;
5.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to persuade others
on the benefits to adopt better and safe mining practices and creating
opportunities for sound savings and investment models for miners ;
6.
The ability to communicate clearly and tactfully at different
levels, both orally and in writing ;
7.
The ability to manage own time and prioritise with minimal
supervision;
8.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of local languages
spoken in the project regions (Migori, Kisii and Lolgorian) is an added
advantage;
9.
Possess a Kenyan driving licence and ability to ride a
motorbike.
