The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
The Individual Capacity Strengthening (ICS) unit in the Research
Capacity Strengthening (RCS) Division seeks to engage twelve (12) Research
Assistants (RAs) for the Partnership for Education of Health Professionals
(PEP) project. The project aims to improve the management of cardiometabolic
diseases (CMDs) in Kenya through research evidence generation and capacity
strengthening. Specific objectives of this project include:1)To conduct a
baseline assessment that identifies individual and institutional capacity gaps
regarding management of CMDs in Kenya and 2)To strengthen the capacity of
medical training college (MTC) faculty and clinical mentors, for clinical
medicine and nursing, through a short course training on management of CMDs.
The RAs will support the project’s fieldwork activities.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Administer
online survey using
- KoBo Collect or
related program.
- Conduct in-depth
interviews and focus group interviews with select study participants.
- Transcribe
verbatim audio recordings from interviews.
- Data entry,
review and edit to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
- Collection and
collation of research data from different sources like online surveys.
- Perform
administrative tasks related to the project.
Qualifications &
Experience:
- Master’s degree
in Gender and Development Studies, Education, Population
Studies/Demography, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics, or related
discipline (A Bachelor’s degree in these fields coupled with adequate
experience is acceptable).
- At least two
years’ experience in research field work including data collection,
managing data collection teams, and data analysis.
- Proven
quantitative data collection and analysis skills, with familiarity with
related analysis packages STATA, SPSS, R.
- Proven
qualitative data collection and analysis skills, with familiarity with
related analysis packages Nvivo or Atlas ti.
- Ability to work
independently, set priorities, multitask, and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent
interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a
culturally diverse team.
- Must be able to
communicate and write in English.
Desirable skills:
- Experience
conducting qualitative research interviews.
- Experience in
coding data using NVivo or any other software.
- Experience in
transcribing audio recordings for research.
- Knowledge of
Kenya Medical Training College work environment.
