Project Officer Job in Kenya

WWF, the Global Conservation Organization, through its office in Kenya, is seeking to recruit key staff to work in the Mau Mara Serengeti (MMS) landscape.

The MMS Landscape is one of the four priority landscapes in WWF’s African Rift Lakes (ARL) Priority Place.

This trans-boundary landscape includes the world-famous Mara-Serengeti ecosystem and large parts of the Mau Forest Complex.

Landscape’s rich biodiversity also includes important populations of WWF flagship species such as the African Elephant and the Eastern Black Rhinoceros.

In order to address the increasing threats on this unique landscape, WWF has reinforced its long-standing support to this area by combining projects into one comprehensive landscape programme.

We therefore require the following staff to help manage this programme:

Position Title: Project Officer

Supervised by: MMS Programme Manager

Supervises: None

Location: Project Office, Narok

Mission of the Department: To support the implementation to the highest standards of MMS programme framework objectives in line with the WWF Kenya Conservation Action Plan.

Major Functions: The Project Officer will work on full time basis to ensure that the project outputs and activities in his/her area of assignment are carried out as laid down in the project documents and are articulated to meet the laid down project objectives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Gathering and collecting baseline data as well as developing baseline indicators for the outputs as stipulated in the project document;
  • Work closely with communities (represented in local natural resources management institutions such as WRUAs), Government ministries and Private sector and other key stakeholders to develop actions that will ensure participatory and sustainable management of land and water resources within the lower catchment zone of the Mara River basin;
  • Engage the government especially the county governmentat policy level and other relevant stakeholder/partners and develop modalities of collaboration;
  • Take a lead role in the development and implementation of a monitoring protocol for the project;
  • Adhere to WWF’s technical and administrative requirements regarding the coordination and implementation of the work plans including timely preparation of technical reports and budgets;
  • Provide information for the quarterly WWF Kenya newsletter and website, as well as working closely with the communication manager to generate articles for publication;
  • Work in close consultation with the Programme Manager in drawing work plans which should be approved by the same and in monitoring activities as per the monitoring schedule;
  • Be willing to undertake any other duties as assigned by the Programme manager

Required Qualifications:
  • A University degree related to Wildlife Management, Natural resources/rangeland management or related sciences;
  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in environmental/natural resources sciences issues with specific background and experience in biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region. A proven ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders in the field of conservation;
  • A proven ability to work effectively with local CSOs and facilitating links between government and communities;
  • Good analytical, writing and communication experience and skills;
  • A demonstrated fund raising and resource mobilization ability, and project implementation and management experience will be an added advantage;
  • Must have a god understanding of conservation initiatives, resource assessment at regional national and local level; addressing socioeconomic factors, resource threats impacting the landscape and key forest resources, and developing and implementing conservation plans;
  • Computer literacy;
  • A clean driving license;
  • Ability to work in a team.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None
