Oxfam’s Kenya Programme is a complex programme that incorporates both rapid and slow onset emergencies as well as longer term development and policy work. 

Oxfam Kenya applies a one programme approach which means it has multiple activities that support a holistic approach to humanitarian, development and advocacy for long lasting change in poverty reduction.

Oxfam Kenya is engaging in the great changes taking place in Kenya including the devolution of government, preparation for peaceful elections, the discovery of Oil in the Arid Lands and the expansion of informal urban settlements. 

Oxfam in Kenya works in the north, principally in Turkana, Dadaab and Wajir, Nairobi and on national level advocacy and coordination issues in multi stakeholder fora. To this end, we are seeking to fill the following positions:

Policy And Advocacy Coordinator

Ref: (INT5649) Nairobi Based
Contract: C 2 National - Fixed term; 6 Months (Maternity cover)
Salary: Kshs 224,782 Gross p.m.( Entry Level);

Reporting to the National program coordinator, the policy and advocacy coordinator will support the wider programme team in the selection of advocacy issues, development and implementation of advocacy strategies. 

He/she will support in research, policy identification & analysis as well as lobbying on poverty related socio- economic issues as identified during problem identification. 

The post holder will also monitor the implementation of the advocacy strategy and provide advice and guidance to programme teams, including monitoring and evaluating program advocacy work.

To be considered for this position, you will possess a bachelor’s degree in public policy, political science, international relations, international affairs or any other relevant field with over five years extensive experience in emergency and development work with a mature understanding of context, dilemmas, challenges and ways of working in management but with a track record in advocacy. 

You will have a strong analytical ability as well as the ability to crystallise issues in complex situations

ECHO Project Officer

REF: (EC-PROG001) Wajir Based
Contract: D2 National -Fixed term; 15 months;
Salary: Kshs 121,468 Gross p.m. (entry Level).;

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Project officer will provide support to the project by identifying and addressing problems or delays in carrying out projects implementation activities, ensuring gender analysis is carried out in the project sites, ensure the involvement of the poorest members of the community in programme identification, design and implementation and monitoring, collaborate with other agencies and partner organizations as appropriate as well as represent Oxfam in external meetings as requested. 

The post holder will be expected to influence policy by ensuring that Oxfam has an understanding on the impact of government policies on the poor, especially women, and that this knowledge is used to influence the government and other actors as well as work to build the capacity of the beneficiaries and partners to lobby and advocate for policy change. 

The incumbent of this position will be expected to take lead in providing support in emergencies by participating in carrying out of assessments, making proposals and implementation emergency interventions as appropriate.

The Officer will directly support the mitigation of resource based conflicts, participate in any Consortium Contingency Planning and Vulnerability Surveillance and the Development of a resilience strategy, advocate and work with Community Disaster Management Committees, leaders and community members to ensure Oxfam projects benefit the most marginalized people in the community, and contribute to greater preparedness and strengthening of community resilience as well as ensure improved quality and availability of early warning information by working closely with NDMA Early Warning System, County Steering Groups (CSG) to collate information on key indicators including price, livestock body condition, food prices and distress sales
  • To be successful in this role, you should have at least a Degree in Social Sciences, Agriculture, and Disaster Preparedness or any other social sciences. 
  • You will have four years relevant work experience in Humanitarian and development organizations directly working with community groups. 
  • You should have experience and understanding of Project formulation, planning, implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • You should possess a good understanding of DRR standards and planning during all the emergency preparedness, response and recovery phases. 
  • Assessment, analytical and planning skills, good report writing skills, conflict resolution skills and ability to work well in teams will be also required. 
  • Knowledge of Somali/Borana languages is an added advantage.
