Organizational background

The World Food Programme Somalia Programme activities include


emergency school feeding and general provision of food to the less fortunate members of the society in Somalia. The WFP Somalia Country Office is based in Kenya and has five Sub Offices in Somalia namely Hargeisa, Bossaso, Merka, Bualle and Wajid.

This position is open to both male and female candidates. Qualified Somali nationals and Female candidates in particular, are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Logistics Officer with Deputy Country Director as second-level supervisor and is under the technical supervision of the Senior Public Affairs Officer, or in his absence the Regional Public Information Officer in Nairobi.

In order to support WFP Somalia, the Public Information Officer based in Nairobi with travel to Somalia when needed will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Analyze and keep current on WFP activities in Somalia and the political and civil events that affect these activities; disseminate media reports to management;
  • Help implement a communication strategy for WFP Somalia focusing on audiences within Somalia; evaluate the relative effectiveness of this strategy;
  • Draft news releases and other documents such as talking points, key messages and question and answers for use with the media and other audiences; assist in the organization of press conferences and other media-related activities and the dissemination of such messages to Somali-language media and other outlets;
  • Act as a spokesperson for the Programme to Somali-speaking media; maintain contacts with media and web representatives in Somalia and Kenya and others to direct their attention to the activities and achievements of WFP in the region;
  • Provide video footage, digital stills and stories for internal and external use, such as WFP website, if possible; shot list video and provide captions for stills;
  • Organize and conduct trips to the field with media and other trips without the media to gather information on WFP activities and disseminate key messages
  • When required update internal and external WFP documents, such as the Country Profile on the web and talking points. with key messages for WFP;
  • Provide monthly inputs in a timely fashion to the RBM charts for Rome;
  • If required, respond to emergencies as needed by getting to the site as quickly as possible and contacting the media or answering questions from the media;
  • Ensure that responses to direct or indirect requests for information about the work of WFP promotes a better understanding of its objectives and activities;
  • Provide ‘damage control’ when reports damaging to the reputation of WFP Somalia are either in preparation or are published or broadcast; gather information from within WFP Somalia to present the best case for WFP;
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience:

Education:
 Advanced university degree or university degree with experience and advanced training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: journalism, international relations, editing, communications or other related fields, or relevant professional experience as well as deep wide-ranging knowledge of the profession of journalism, particularly foreign correspondence and international media, either print, radio or television.

Experience:
 At least three years of postgraduate professional experience as a journalist or professional writer.

Language:
 Excellent command of English; fluent spoken and written Somali language is essential.

Knowledge:
 Training and/or experience utilising computers, including word processing, spreadsheet and other standard WFP software packages and systems. General knowledge of UN system policies, rules, regulations and procedures governing administration.
