Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Project Coordinator – Improved Sustainable Livelihoods for Disadvantaged Women (ISL)

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is an international federation of member organizations working in development through volunteers to fight poverty and disadvantage.

VSO Jitolee is a member of the VSO federation based in Nairobi with an East African regional mandate to promote volunteerism and recruit skilled professionals from Kenya and Uganda to serve as volunteers in VSO programmes in 44 countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition, VSO Jitolee contributes to Kenya’s national development through international volunteers who work with local partners across the country.

VSO Jitolee is an independent INGO registered in Kenya and governed by a local board.

We are looking for a highly motivated Kenyan to manage the ISL project with in our Secure Livelihoods programme.

This four year project has been running since 2008 and is expected to end in 2012. Employment will therefore be on a fixed contract of about two years.

The job

As the lead implementer of ISL Project you will be expected to demonstrate:
• An improvement in the governance and management systems, technical capacities and lobbying and advocacy skills for partner organizations and women community based/micro enterprise groups and to ensure the realisation of all ISL outcomes.
• Effectively managed relationships with co-implementing partners and collaborators
• Effective monitoring of reports that define progress towards achieving targets and objectives in the specific components.
• Well documented processes, successes and key learning from ISL as the project moves towards conclusion.
• Evidence of well coordinated project work that supports timely provisions of the project milestones and tasks.
• Evidence of tools developed for monitoring and evaluation of the project.
• Evidence of contributing to the Secure Livelihoods programatic goals and the overall VSO Jitolee goal.
• Appropriate use of ISL funds in line with the donor contract.
The person

We expect the suitable candidate to be able to demonstrate that s/he has/is:
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Commerce/Business Administration/entrepreneurship.
• At least 3 years relevant experience including project cycle management, research and monitoring and Evaluation of projects.
• Experience of not less than 3 years in micro enterprise promotion is key.
• Administrative and organisational ability, ideally, the candidate will have worked at community level, and be familiar with participatory methodology.
• A clean driver’s licence and be accustomed to road travel.
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications
• Good written and oral communication with strong people skills with the ability to network, and influence key stakeholders. Aware of diversity and is specifically gender sensitive
• Self drive and able to work effectively with minimum supervision
• A good team player with a high degree of personal commitment and integrity, enthusiasm and the ability to give and receive feedback
• An appreciation of the ethos of volunteerism.
