Job Description
The
Medical Insurance Underwriter is responsible for evaluating insurance
applications and determining the risk of insuring applicants. They analyze
various factors, including financial records, health status, and other risk
indicators, to decide on coverage terms and pricing.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Research and understand various medical
conditions and insurance policies.
- Write clear and informative content about
medical insurance products.
- Develop materials such as brochures,
flyers, and web content for insurance plans.
- Ensure all written content meets legal
and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals
to ensure accuracy of medical information.
- Translate complex medical terminology
into language that is accessible to policyholders.
- Update existing documents to reflect
changes in insurance policies or medical guidelines.
- Assist in the development of training
materials for insurance agents and staff.
- Create educational articles for both
internal and public awareness.
- Proof read and edit medical writings for
clarity and coherence.
- Conduct interviews with medical experts
for specialized content.
- Keep abreast of developments in both the
medical and insurance fields.
- Participate in the product development
process by providing insights from a medical writing perspective.
- Manage content across multiple platforms
to ensure consistency.
- Coordinate with legal teams to verify the
compliance of promotional materials.
- Analyze customer feedback on insurance
products to improve communication strategies.
- Provide support for claims processing by
clarifying medical terms and conditions.
- Facilitate communication between insurers
and medical professionals.
- Contribute to policy wording to ensure it
reflects medical accuracy.
- Monitor and report on the impact of
written materials on customer engagement and understanding.
- Support the creation of proposals for new
business opportunities.
- Maintain a library of medical resources
and reference materials.
- Educate staff on medical concepts and
insurance products.
- Review and summarize medical studies
relevant to insurance offerings.
- Advise on risk assessment from a medical
standpoint for underwriting purposes.
Education & Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance,
Health Information, Actuarial Science or a related discipline.
- 5-6 years of experience as an insurance
medical underwriter.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking
capabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication
abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
applications and related software.
- Ability to work independently and in a
team context.
- Understanding of underwriting concepts,
rules, and practices in the medical field.
- Knowledge of insurance policies and
coverage alternatives.
