Research Officer


Project description
The Spatial Repellents (SR) project is funded by UNITAID and seeks to fill the gaps for assessing spatial repellent products efficacy, deployment and uptake strategies. In this regard, Kenya has been selected as the site for conducting the epidemiological evaluation of spatial repellent product efficacy in a high malaria transmission setting. This study will be conducted in Busia County over the next two years. The project seeks to fill the following position(s).
Position: Research Officer MR 11

Location: Busia County with residence around the KEMRI ALUPE Campus in Busia
Duration: One (1) year with a possibility of extension
Reporting to: Principal Investigator
Qualifications
·         BSc Nursing plus MSc Epidemiology or MPH from a recognized University. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB. ChB) with MSc Epidemiology or MPH will also be considered.
·         MSc in Epidemiology, Public Health or related field
·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·         At least 3 years professional experience in epidemiological research relevant to the transmission and/or control of tropical infectious diseases
·         Previous experience working in a multi-disciplinary team including with ministry of health teams and community health worker teams
·         Strong hands-on experience with current methods of epidemiology surveillance; having worked in a multidisciplinary, multi-site project will be an added advantage
·         Strong supervisory and management skills
·         Strong data management and analysis skills
·         Strong project budgeting skills
·         Possession of a valid certificate in human subjects research protection (Mandatory but can be acquired during in-processing)
·         Ability to work independently, in a timely manner and under minimum supervision
·         Willingness to reside in field study sites
·         Experience working in/with a Public health Institutions
Responsibilities
·         The primary role of the SR Epidemiology Program Manager will be to oversee the implementation of the epidemiologic components of the study during the conduct of the SR study in consultation with the Social Science and Entomology Program Managers
·         Lead the development of an epidemiological surveillance plan and standard operating procedures for all activities under the surveillance plan. Manage and supervise field-based
·         epidemiology team of >35 people including clinical officers and community interviewers, to ensure adherence to SOPs for participant enrolment and monthly follow ups. Manage and supervise laboratory-based teams comprising microscopists and lab technologists based at the KEMRI ALUPE Campus.
·         Coordinate activities of field staff, laboratory staff and data management staff to ensure seamless flow of activities and data
·         Data cleaning and summaries of all epidemiological data including preliminary analysis in consultation with the PI and data manager.
·         Preparation of Epidemiological reports and submission of the same to the PI in a timely fashion
·         Oversight of procurement and inventory supplies and equipment for the epidemiology component of the study
·         Implement capacity-building efforts to increase and expand the skills of local counterparts and field team technicians.
·         Participate in planning meetings and scheduled conference calls with the study team and study partners
·         Perform any other related duties that may be assigned from time to time
Terms of Employment: One (1) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months.
Remuneration
Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.

Research Assistant Internship (2 Posts)

Position: Research Assistant Intern (2 positions)
Location: Nairobi
Reports to: Study PI
The interns will be trained on
·         Collection of quality data from patients` charts
·         Comparing abstracted data to source documents
·         Data entry and basic data analysis
Qualifications
·         Possess a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Institution in Biomedical Sciences (Microbiology, Immunology, Virology) or any other related field
In addition, the applicants must:
·         Be a Kenyan youth below 30 years of age; and
·         Provide a Certificate of good conduct.

The section has a vacancy for an Office Assistant.
Position: Office Assistant MR 4 (1 position)
Location: Kisian
Reporting to: Principal Investigator.
Qualifications
·         Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) D+ and above.
·         Certificate and experience in computer application packages.
·         One year experience in office work.
·         Excellent interpersonal, communication and highly effective multi-tasking skills with ability to coordinate and prioritize workload.
·         Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
·         Perform general office management at the office of project Principal Investigator.
·         Perform general clerical duties including data entry, record keeping, organizing for meetings, requesting for supplies, etc.
·         Operate office machines to make copies of documents
·         Perform any other relate tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

Assistant Research Officer

The section has a vacancy for an Assistant Research Officer (ARO).
Position: Assistant Research Officer MR 9 (1 position).
Location: Kisian
Reporting to: Principal Investigator
Qualifications
·         Bachelor degree in biomedical/biological science, microbiology or any science related course from a recognized institution.
·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·         At least two years work experience in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a research set-up
·         Experience in viral PCR work will be an added advantage.
·         Strong hands-on experience in running a biomedical research laboratory.
·         Strong supervisory and management skills.
·         Strong data processing skills.
·         Ability to work independently, in an organized and a timely manner and under minimum supervision.
Responsibilities
·         The primary role of the ARO will be to test human blood samples for the presence of dengue and chikungunya viruses using real-time PCR in a research laboratory.
·         Implement all laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
·         Upload all laboratory data on online databases.

·         Relay laboratory results promptly to field teams.
·         Manage all laboratory equipment and field supplies.
·         Participate in planning meetings and scheduled conference calls with other members of the study team.
·         Coordinate and train students on attachment and internship assigned to the laboratory.

Clinical Officer

The section has a vacancy for a Clinical Officer.
Position: Clinical Officer MR 7 (1 position)
Location: Kisian
Reporting to: Principal Investigator.
Qualifications
·         Diploma in clinical medicine.
·         Be registered with relevant professional body and in possession of a valid practicing license.
·         At least two years of clinical trial experience.
·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
·         Fluency in both English and Swahili, written and spoken.
·         Training in Good Clinical Practices and Paediatric Life Support are added advantages
Responsibilities
·         Collect clinical data for the project from study participants.
·         Perform phlebotomy on consented study participants.
·         Attend to clinical follow-up of participants.
·         Provide clinical care to study participants in a designated health facility, which includes on-call.
·         Liaise with other study team members as necessary to achieve the desired goals.
·         Contribute to seminars, educational activities in a selected health facility.
·         Any other related duties as assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

·         Diploma in medical laboratory from a recognized institution.
·         Registered with Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
·         Two years’ experience in both field and laboratory work in a research setting.
·         Experience and skilled in phlebotomy.
·         Experience with data entry.
Responsibilities
·         Supervise a team of Field Assistants to conduct scheduled surveys on healthy community cohort component of this study.
·         Perform phlebotomy on consented study participants.
·         Collect data as per study protocol using tablets.
·         Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Position: Laboratory Technologist MR 7 (2 positions)

Reporting to: Assistant Research Officer/Principal Investigator.
Qualifications
·         Diploma in applied biology or related subject from a recognized institution.
·         Two years’ experience in both field and laboratory research setting.
·         Experience with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or field entomology on mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti, will be added advantage.
·         Experience with data entry.
Responsibilities
·         Prepare human blood samples for testing for presence of dengue and chikungunya viruses using real-time PCR in a research laboratory.
·         Participate in the management of project laboratory equipment
·         Make requisition for and control use of field supplies.
·         Be responsible for sample collection of Aedes aegypti eggs, larvae, pupae and adults at targeted places by assigned entomology team.
·         Rear Aedes aegypti in the insectaries.
·         Perform morphological identification of mosquitoes.

Study Clinician

This program is Collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases.
Due to its continued growth, the program has a vacancy in the IMPROVE 2 project within the Malaria Branch.
POSITION: Study Clinician, MR 7
LOCATION: Rabuor Sub-County Hospital
REPORTING to: Study Coordinator
Qualifications
·         Diploma in Clinical Medicine
·         Experience in malaria in pregnancy clinical trials
·         Experience in HIV care and treatment
·         GCP training
Desired Qualities
·         Fluency in English and Kiswahili- both written and oral.
·         Excellent communication skills; ability to work well in a team, with the public and to collaborate with counterparts.
·         Experience in cardiac safety monitoring conducting ECGs
·         Experience with ultrasound in pregnancy
·         Able to write regular reports in a timely manner
·         Able to work closely with ministry of health PMTCT teams

Responsibilities
Specific tasks and responsibilities:
·         Provide participant education and informed consent for the trial
·         Administer study drugs in line with the protocol and standard operating procedures
·         Conduct cardiac safety monitoring for trial participants by carrying out ECGs for a sub-set of participants
·         Review all sick visits and refer for appropriate care
·         Complete case report forms according to Good Clinical Practice standards
·         Participate in sample collection as required by the protocol and standard operating procedures
·         Advice PMTCT providers on switching guidelines for eligible participants as per the trial
·         Advice PMTCT providers with HIV care and treatment of research participants
·         Conduct quality checks of case report forms and correct errors before data entry
·         Conduct maternal and infant anthropometry for research participants
·         Other duties as assigned by the study coordinator
