Quantitative and Qualitative Field Interviewers – The Human Milk Banking Research Project
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant research on population, health, education, and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.
Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action to improve the lives of all Africans. APHRC invites applications for quantitative and qualitative field Interviewers, in its Human Milk Banking (HMB 2) project, to be conducted in Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

The main aim of the project is to determine the operational feasibility, effectiveness, acceptability of establishing a Mother-Baby Friendly Initiative Plus (MBFI+) program that includes HMB and breastfeeding promotion in Kenya.
Minimum Qualifications Required for Quantitative Interviewers:
·         Have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate, with a minimum grade of C+;
·         A first degree or Diploma in Nutrition, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, public Health or closely related field
·         Proven experience in quantitative research data collection and experience in facility based data collection;
·         Previous experience or currently working in the study health facilities will be an added advantage.
·         Fluent in English and Kiswahili, in both oral and written form
·         Proficiency in using smartphones and/electronic gadgets for quantitative data collection especially use of Open Data Kit (ODK) or Survey CTO
·         Be familiar with and proficient in computer applications including use of MS Excel and MS Word
·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills
·         Available for the entire training and data collection period as indicated above
Duties and Responsibilities
·         Recruit participants who meet the eligibility criteria
·         Conduct interviews on all recruited study participants
·         Conduct secondary data collection from medical records
·         Complete, edit and submit all interviews for cross-checking and verification by the supervisor.
·         Keep updated records and databases of assigned work
·         Hold debrief discussions and exploration of ideas with the field team and the investigators
·         Other related activities, assigned by the supervisor and project manager
Minimum Qualifications Required for Qualitative Interviewers:
·         A first degree in Nutrition, Nursing, Public Health or closely related field
·         Fluent in English and Swahili, in both oral and written form
·         Have proven experience and skills in qualitative research work
·         Can facilitate interviews and group discussions in English and Swahili
·         Has experience in note-taking during qualitative discussions
·         Has strong interpersonal and communication skills
·         Experience in health facility-based data collection will be an added advantage
Duties and Responsibilities
·         Moderate / facilitate qualitative interviews with various people in Pumwani Maternity Hospital and other professionals
·         Take notes and compile comprehensive qualitative interview debriefing notes and develop qualitative report writing.
·         Hold debrief discussions and exploration of ideas with the field team and the investigators
·         Prepare data collection progress updates and reports
·         Other related activities, assigned by the supervisor and project manager.
Qualitative and Quantitative candidates should be:
·         Residents in Nairobi
·         Be prepared to work full time on the project for the duration of the data collection.
·         Flexible and available to work odd hours ( when necessary ), under minimum supervision

Job Vacancy: Temporary Research Assistant

APHRC invites applications for the position of a temporary Research Assistant in its Joep Lange Study.
The main aim of this project is to evaluate the existing capacity of the health system to manage chronic diseases and the policy environment that supports chronic disease management in five key regions in Kenya: Nairobi/Central, Western/Nyanza, Rift valley, Coast/North Eastern and Eastern.
Duties and Responsibilities
·         Supervise and coordinate field work in the execution of the research project to ensure timely implementation of field operations
·         Coordinate mobilization and sensitization of health facilities in relation to the research project
·         Monitor field work and ensure field staff adhere to data quality guidelines
·         Lead the development of fieldwork progress reports as per the laid down schedule
·         Conduct spot checks and edit questionnaires
·         Coordinate all field logistical activities pertaining to the project
·         Other task assigned by the supervisor, project manager and principal investigator
Minimum qualifications required:
·         Degree in Public Health, any Social Science, or other related fields

·         At least 2-years post-qualification experience in research including coordinating fieldwork or research activities at the community level
·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
·         Experience working in health facility surveys will be an added advantage

·         Have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate, with a minimum grade of C Plain
·         Previous experience in conducting health facility surveys is desirable
·         Be a resident of the region where the study is conducted
·         Experience in qualitative data collection and electronic data capture will be an added advantage
·         Must be fluent in both English and Swahili (verbal and written)
·         Excellent communication, interpersonal and report writing skills
·         Ability to work full time on the project for the duration of the study
·         Experience in using electronic data collection devices like electronic digital recorders and survey CTO or Open Data Kit (ODK)
Duties and Responsibilities
·         Conduct interviews on all recruited study participants
·         Complete, edit and submit all assigned interviews for cross-checking and verification by the supervisor on a daily basis
·         Keep updated records and databases of assigned work
·         Regularly file reports on project activities
·         Review the collected data to ensure all questions are completed prior to online submission
·         Data collection progress report writing
·         Meet the team leader on a regular basis to submit progress updates
·         Follow-up with participants for missing responses or correct any inaccurate responses
·         Other task assigned by the supervisor, project manager and principal investigator
In addition, priority will be given to candidates who are:
·         Residents of one of the five regions: Nairobi/Central, Western/Nyanza, Rift valley, Coast/North Eastern and Eastern.
·         Are ready and willing to work full-time on the project for the duration of data collection (September 3, 2019 to December 15, 2019).
·         Are flexible and available to work odd hours (when necessary), under minimum supervision.
