About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a non-profit research organization that creates and evaluates approaches to solving development problems. 


IPA disseminates the results of its evaluations to policymakers, practitioners, investors and donors around the world.
 
About the project: Early Learning in Private and Public Pre-Primary and Primary Schools (Kenya) project will compare learning outcomes in low cost private schools relative to other available options in the vicinity. 

There is tremendous growth and innovation in the low cost private school market and this project aims to use a randomized controlled trial to better understand the effectiveness of such schools relative to public school options. 

The Principal Investigators for this project are Anthony Keats (Wesleyan University), Michael Kremer (Harvard University) Isaac Mbiti (University of Virginia) and Owen Ozier (World Bank).
 
Innovations for Poverty Action is currently preparing for a phone call follow up survey to parents who applied to the UnitedWEREACH scholarship program.

About the Position: Reporting to the Senior Field Officer and Field Manager, the Field Officer will assist in data collection through phone calls. 

The Field Officer will work closely with fellow Field Officers, and with the management team. He/She will spend approximately all of his/her time in the office.
 
Responsibilities
  • Arrive at work on time;
  • Complete scheduled activities each day in a timely manner;
  • Demonstrate integrity and understanding during interaction with community members and partner organization staff;
  • Assist in daily survey organization and storage;
  • Ensure data integrity is maintained at all times and minimize errors in data collection;
  • Updating the phone call spreadsheet at all times.
  • Provide the SFOs/FM with daily feedback regarding phone calls made.
  • On non-field days, perform office duties with care (for instance translation work, which will be taught as needed).
Qualifications
 
Required:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
  • Experience with data collection through household surveys, phone call interviews.
  • Ability to recognize when questions are difficult or unclear to subjects;
  • Good interpersonal skills; specifically, good at interacting with parents/teachers;
  • Excellent note taking ability during interviews;
  • Comfortable with interviewing individuals within their homes;
  • Basic excel knowledge and skills (mandatory);
  • Ability to comfortably work with groups and within groups.
Desired:
  • Bachelors’ degree or college diploma/certificate in social sciences and education;
  • Past experience in data collection – show proof of this in application;
  • Experience working with an education-field project is an added advantage.
