Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a non-profit research organization that creates and evaluates approaches to solving development problems.  

IPA disseminates the results of its evaluations to policy makers, practitioners, investors and donors around the world.

The Women Entrepreneurship Development (WED) Project is an evaluation of International Labour Organization’s (ILO’s) Gender and Enterprise Together (GET Ahead) package of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Development and Economic Empowerment(WEDEE) Program. 

The GET Ahead element is a business management training suite with a strong gender component offered in over a dozen countries.
 
The WED Project is based in Kakamega, but operates in four (4) different counties, including Kisii, Embu and Kitui. 

We are seeking Field Officers (FOs) to take part in locating and interviewing business women in market places and in their villages, conducting structured surveys on paper and electronically, and organizing data. 

The Field Officer will be based in the Kakamega office, and will require travel to the areas of Kisii, Embu and Kitui for about an equal duration for each station. 

Reporting to the Research Associate, the Field Officer will work closely with fellow Field Officers and with the WED Field Manager. 

He/she will spend approximately 90% of his/her time in the field and 10% of his/her time in the office.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure data integrity is maintained at all times and minimize errors in data collection
  • Completion of scheduled activities each day in a timely manner
  • Interact with community members with the highest level of integrity and understanding
  • On non-field days, conscientious performance of office work, for instance translations, and peer training/learning
  • Assist in daily electronic devices maintenance and storage
  • Maintaining high standards of professional integrity in all activities
  • Help in mentoring fellow staff and community members who are directly linked to the project
  • Successfully complete all tasks assigned by the WED management team
Qualifications:
 
Required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
  • Certificate/diploma/degree preferably in the social sciences, development studies, business studies, or any applicable course
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Previous experience in data collection and survey administration
Desired
  • Experience with position responsibilities listed above
  • Computer literacy
  • Fluent in local languages of the areas of operation
