Clerk of Works (Site Supervisor, Site Inspector)

Our client is looking for an experienced Clerk of Works who will monitor the work of companies that carry out their contracts.

Objective of Position

The purpose of the position is to make sure that work is carried out to the client’s standards and specifications.

The individual will make sure that the correct materials and workmanship are used and that the client receives value for money.

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

Responsibilities:
  • Conferring with architects and contractors as to the preparation and interpretation of plans and specifications
  • Inspecting all materials going into the project, the workmanship and practices of contractors and/or crews engaged in construction
  • Assisting a superior in the review of plans, specifications, and designs submitted by contractors, architects, or engineers
  • Assisting in interpreting provisions of contracts, plans, specifications, and designs
  • Ensuring that construction work schedules are maintained
  • To be responsible for continuous inspection during construction and to ensure adherence to all building codes, plans, specification, and allotted budget;
  • Monitoring the continuous inspection of workman shop, materials, and methods
  • Monitoring and reviewing the work of architects, contractors, and other personnel assigned to the construction project.
  • Reviewing construction contracts and specifications prepared by the architects and contractor to ensure that all items are covered and are in agreement with the appropriate requirements
  • Reviewing requests by the architects and contractors for changes in the plans in accordance with delegated authority
  • To be responsible for following the construction budget in conjunction with the architects
  • Giving initial approval to vouchers for payment to various professionals and trade contractors engaged on the project
  • To attend various meetings and submit written progress reports

Qualifications:
  • Degree or Diploma in Engineering / Building Construction or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
  • 5 experience in a similar position
  • Membership in a professional body will be an added advantage
  • Be conversant with modern building construction practices

Skills and Competencies:
  • A wide understanding of the building industry, including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and legal requirements
  • Attention to detail when checking work and materials
  • Honest and vigilant to ensure work meets standards
  • Have good spoken and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and project management skills
