Budgets and Grants Officer

Job Purpose

ILRI seeks to recruit a dynamic and competent Budgets and Grants Officer to manage Biosciences Team budget reporting. 

This position exists to ensure that grants are managed in the most effective and efficient manner through making sure that Financial reports to donors are accurate and prepared in a timely manner.  

Payables and receivables are regularly monitored and are within manageable limits.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for financial management of bilateral projects in the Biosciences Research Team.
1.   Reviews for accuracy and timeliness of donor reports that demonstrate sufficient trail to the general ledger and supporting documentation; 
2.   Works with the Program Accountants to share monthly ILRI financial reports with budget holders in the assigned Team by the 10th of every month;
3.   Checks monthly reports to confirm they reconcile to trial balance stage to include income, sub grants related payables & receivables, donor payables and receivables; 
4.   Test for accuracy of computed overhead earnings and full cost recovery charges on projects managed;
  • Liaise with Program Management Officers and Program Accountants to ensure efficient management of sub grantees for respective projects. Provide accurate monthly partner reports depicting balances owed and when they’ll be liquidated;
  • Ensure efficient project audits with few queries executed within budgets and support annual statutory audit by providing requested information and schedules;
  •  Support annual budget preparation and periodic project budgets through review, collation and consolidation;
  • Reviewing and ensuring project contracted financial obligations are accurately interpreted and executed hence timely and accurate donor financial statements and invoicing;
  • Updates donor database with key relevant information to enable tracking of proposals, contracts, income requests & receipts and reporting schedule.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Finance;
  • Certified Public Accountant, Kenya CPA (K) or ACCA qualification;
  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience at supervisory level;
  • Ability to technically supervise a team of Program accountants;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and personal organization skills;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to support external audit requirements;
  • Computer skills, including sound knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Experience with Sun Systems.
Terms of Appointment

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on a 2 year contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Job level and salary

This position is job Grade 3A. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.

Research Technician - ReSAKSS

The Position

ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Technician to join a small team of professionals working on the Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS) initiative.

The objective of ReSAKSS is to provide data, information and knowledge to stakeholders in order to improve the formulation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of agricultural and rural development strategies in Africa.

The successful candidate will work with the Eastern and Central Africa Node of ReSAKSS based at ILRI-Nairobi which is set up to serve the COMESA region in the implementation of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program (CAADP).

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing the contents of Food Prices and Agriculture investments web portals by continuously updating the websites and databases;
  • Contribute to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders;
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of CAADP indicators in the COMESA region by continuously collating, collecting and analysing data as assigned;
  • Contribute to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by ReSAKSS.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in statistics, agricultural economics, economics or other related field with application to agriculture and rural development;
  • A Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience;
  • Knowledge of  agricultural and rural development issues in Sub Saharan Africa;
  • Experience with quantitative analysis;
  • Experience in database management and analyzing large datasets to answer analytical questions;
  • Proficiency in using Ms. Office and statistical packages such as STATA, SPSS, SAS among others;
  • Demonstrated good organisational skills and ability to work under minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure, often to meet tight deadlines without compromising the quality of deliverables;
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting;
  • A good team player.
Terms of Appointment

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on a 2 year fixed term contract.

This position is job Grade 2B. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.
