Nuru International Kenya is accepting applications for an Agriculture Consultant to work on issues related to Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease in Kenya.
Location: Isibania, Kuria West District, Migori County, Kenya
Timeline: January to June 2013.
Kenya Work Authorization is required.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Lead
strategy for Nuru’s response to Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease in Kenya in
conjunction with the Agriculture Program Manager in Kenya and the
Agriculture Senior Program Manager (remote).
- Build
and rely on a network of partners in Kenya and internationally to research
and strategize about Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease.
- Inform
strategy on the ground through actionable items to be implemented in
conjunction with the Agriculture Program Manager.
- Supervise
the MLND-infected crops detection and treatment operations.
- Track
the spread of MLND throughout Kuria West District, in Kenya, and in East
Africa.
- Liaise
with Nuru Kenya’s Social Marketing team to develop awareness materials.
- Coordinate
internal and external communication regarding maize lethal necrosis including
interaction with Nuru staff, members of the public, donors, and partners.
- Maintain
web and other external facing materials up to date, accurate and relevant.
Required Skills and Attributes:
- Bachelor’s
degree in International Development, Business or Agriculture, MA
preferred.
- Experience
in agriculture, crop disease management, and contacts with organizations
working on such issues in Kenya preferred.
- At
least 2 – 3 years of professional experience in agriculture, natural
resources, international development, project management, or related
fields.
- Languages:
English (fluent). Kiswahili (fluency preferred).
- Ability
to do crisis management and rapid, innovative problem solving in uncertain
environments.
- Prior
experience living and/or working in a developing country; experience in
working with the poor.
- Strong
work ethic.
- Strong
quantitative and project management skills.
- Strong
commitment to organization’s mission, vision and theory of change.
- Physically
able and willing to work in both field and office settings.
Additional Considerations:
The consultant must
relocate to Isibania, Migori County, Kenya for the duration of the
contract. No housing or relocation allowance is available.
Frequent travel to
field sites in Kuria West District, and to regional and national level meetings
is expected.
