Wetlands International Kenya Office is recruiting for a Programme
Associate
The Programme Associate will be a key member of the regional team based in Nairobi, working on a broad range of project tasks including data collection & analysis (inc. GIS), advocacy, community level consultation and communications as well as proposal writing.
Coordinates with:
Inside Wetlands International:
Kenya Office Team; Regional Team including Capacity Building Manager, Communications Manager; HQ team including livelihoods and biodiversity teams
Outside Wetlands International:
Governmental representatives, partner organisations, consultants
Overall Purpose Of Job:
The Programme Associate (PA) is responsible for the implementation of programme activities as directed by the Senior Technical Officer.
Other duties include research and document preparation in
support of the development of new initiatives and partnerships.
It is expected that the PA will spend approximately 25% of their
time working directly with partners in the field

Implementation of programmes (85%)
The Programme Associate will work closely with the Senior Technical Officer and Kenya team to ensure effective delivery of the results and objectives of WI’s programmes, often in multi-disciplinary teams based in several locations.
Main duties will include:
- Implementation
of relevant data gathering & analysis mechanisms, including GIS
platforms
- Research
and analysis on key issues to inform advocacy work, eg. Reviewing
strategic plans, analysing water use in specific catchments
- Tracking
media and networks for developments that could impact water resources and
wetlands (eg. Business, policies, disasters…)
- Community
and local government level stakeholder meetings
- Providing
advice on environmental and wetland ecosystem issues to programme partners
- Organising
trainings, workshops, meetings and field trips
- Preparing
and delivering technical content at workshops
- Support
the development of appropriate communications materials, together with
Kenya team and WIA Communications officer
- Provide
input and documentation as required to project planning and reporting
processes
- Supporting
other programme activity related tasks as they arise
Development of new initiatives (15%)
- Research
and data analysis on potential issues identified for future development by
Wetlands International
- Providing
input to project idea development, including writing proposals
Profile:
Expectation for the Position
- S/he
will work effectively and collaboratively in support of building a
team-based culture of work, will perform all duties appropriately for a
multi-cultural environment, treating all persons with dignity and respect,
and will be familiar with and committed to the mission and goals of
Wetlands International.
- S/he
will demonstrate excellent understanding of sustainable ecosystems
management, and be able to clearly explain the concepts involved in a
sustainable ecosystems approach to target audiences from a variety of
sectors and at various levels
Qualifications, experience and competencies required:
Essential
- Master’s
degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Hydrology or GIS. Commensurate
experience may be considered.
- At
least 3 years of relevant employment experience
- Experience
in using GIS
- Experience
of working with CBOs and other stakeholders at community level
- Experience
of data collection on environmental and water management issues in the
field and from desk studies
- Ability
to communicate the benefits of sustainable ecosystems management to
stakeholders from different sectors
- Good
written and oral presentation skills and ability to communicate to a
variety of audiences;
- Confidence
to work alone and dynamism to explore new avenues of enquiry
- Excellent
command of English and Kiswahili
- Comprehensive
computer skills, especially in Word, Excel, Email, Internet packages as
well as GIS software
- Ability
to prioritize and meet deadlines
Preferred
- Proven
Ability to work in teams in a multi-cultural environment Knowledge of Tana
River and Ewaso Nyiro North River Basins.
- Previous
experience with NGO or water management institution
- Driving
License
