Reporting to: The Board, Kenya Media Network on Population and Development (KEMEP)
Background
The Kenya Media Network on Population and Development (KEMEP) is an association of professional journalists working in different media houses whose main focus is to raise the stature of population and development journalism in the media, and the public as a whole, with a view to effecting positive change on matters of population and development.
KEMEP wishes to recruit a National Project Professional Personnel (NPPP) who will spearhead fundraising for its activities, support the implementation of its Annual Work Plan, and coordinate activities between the media and KEMEP’s financial partners. The focus of the NPPP will be to ensure consistent coverage of issues related with population and development, including gender and reproductive health.
Major Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the KEMEP Board and its financial and implementing partners, the NPPP will be responsible for the following:
- Provide
leadership and technical support to KEMEP members in the implementation of
all its programmes and activities as envisaged in its Work Plans.
- As
the Resource Person in KEMEP’s Secretariat, contribute to the effective
functioning of the secretariat and facilitate networking and collaboration
of partners interested in working with the media.
- Coordinate
media coverage with actors in the area of population and development
seeking media coverage.
- Work
closely with key stakeholders in the sector of population and development.
- Monitor
and report on status of media coverage on issues related to population and
development through conducting a daily media analysis.
- Sustain
the highest standards of reporting, writing, editing and broadcasting in
population and development journalism.
- Develop
a strong and vibrant community of journalists concerned with all forms of
population and development journalism and promote understanding between
journalists and their sources of news.
- Advocate
for the improvement of professional development opportunities for
journalists who cover any aspect of population and development.
- Strengthen
the exchange of information and experiences on population and development
issues in Kenya.
- Utilize
all forms of media, including online and social media, to communicate on
population and development issues in Kenya so as to inform and educate
people more widely and intensely.
- Enhance
collaboration and increase interaction between media and organizations
working in the area of population and development.
- Highlight
national and regional population campaigns and other advocacy initiatives.
- Be
the official spokesperson of KEMEP.
- Call
for meetings and be responsible for the custody of KEMEP records and all
documentation.
- Perform
such other duties as may be assigned to him or her from time to time by
the Board.
- Keep
accurate financial records of the network and provide the Board with an
account of transactions.
Expected Deliverables
- Monthly
progress reports on implementation of activities.
- Documentation
of all media reports on population and development.
- An
active, updated and vibrant KEMEP website.
- A
yearly financial report.
- A
functioning KEMEP Secretariat with a regularly updated database on
partners and members involved in population and development.
- Quarterly
Reports to be shared with KEMEP and partners.
- Successful
annual media awards.
Desired Background, Skills and Experience
- A
Masters’ degree in journalism, communication or social sciences.
- At
least 5 years’ experience in the media working as a journalist and/or
editor.
- Established
great relationship and network of media managers and practitioners.
- Firm
understanding of KEMEP’s objectives and vision.
- Excellent
communication, reporting and writing skills.
- A
team player.
- Computer
literate.
- Excellent
skills in fundraising and client management.
- Excellent
skills in public speaking.
- High
integrity, good organization skills, interpersonal skills and ability to
establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations with
stakeholders.
- Ability
to conduct high-level discussions and negotiations with senior government
officials, development partners and media managers.
- Ability
to work in a multi-cultural setting.
- Although
this is an office-based appointment, the successful applicant must be
willing and ready to travel frequently to the field.
