The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights is an independent National Human Rights Institution established in 2003 through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act.

It is the State’s lead agency in the promotion and protection of human rights.

The Commission fulfils its human rights mandate through various programmes of Research and Compliance, Reforms and Accountability, Public Education and Training, investigations and monitoring, Media and Communications, Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and exercise of quasi-judicial powers.

In furtherance of this mandate, the KNCHR plans to build capacity in its regional and head office so as to deliver on the same. KNCHR invites applications from qualified, committed and readily available persons to urgently fill the following vacancies in its various programmes.
Principal Human Rights Officer-Media and Communications

Location: Head Office, with occasional field travel Duration: Five years contract
Key duties and responsibilities

  • Conceptualizing, designing and implementing internal and external communication, advocacy and medial strategies and programmes that advance the commission’s strategic objectives
  • Convening and organizing accountability forums, relevant media and other communication events
  • Generating concepts and coordination of the publication, editing and production of the commission’s journal, key publications and key IEC materials
  • Conceptualizing and coordinating the production of video documentaries, radio programmes and TV programmes.
  • Writing Opinion pieces, media monitoring and supervising KNCHR website administration
  • Quality assurance all the programme outputs
  • Ensuring adequate flow of information within the programme
  • Managing and supervising programme staff and convening periodic meetings of the programme
Skills, Experience & Academic Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Communication
  • Six years experience in Media and communication, human rights/social justice work experience with at least three years at a supervisory level
  • Good understanding of human rights
  • Good electronic media production skills ( video documentary productions, camera work and computer based video editing)
  • Very good IEC materials development skills
  • Excellent computer skills in other computer packages such as desktop publishing, ms office excel power point, Corel draw, Illustrator, and access.
Senior Human Rights Officer (Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Programme)

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Undertaking and disseminating research on economic and social rights issues including public expenditure monitoring, devolved funds and corporate social responsibility
  • Conceptualizing strategies and implementing activities to popularize and protect economic and social rights as human rights.
  • Providing training on economic and social rights issues
  • Ensure effective supervision of technical or service level staff
  • Represent the department in routine technical meetings
Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Attributes
  • A Masters degree in Economics, Anthropology, Sociology or Political Science
  • 4 years experience with at least 2 years at a supervisory level in a busy environment
  • Good understanding of economic social and cultural rights issues, frameworks and indicators.
  • Ability to conduct human rights investigations
  • Experience in building and managing partnerships
  • Program Design and Management
  • Good understanding of social audits/accountability
Senior Human Rights Officer (Policy and Research)

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Designing, coordinating and/or undertaking research on Identified human Rights issues, including by: developing Research tools; conducting field and library research; writing research reports; and designing strategies and implementing activities for dissemination of research findings
  • Preparing advisories and briefs on key human rights issues
  • Coordinating debates/discussions on key human rights issues
  • Managing preparation of the State of Human Rights Report
  • Coordinating relevant conferences and campaigns
  • Undertaking other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A Masters Degree in social sciences or any other relevant field
  • Minimum 4 years experience(2 years at a supervisory level) in research, policy advocacy and legislation review in the human rights/social justice sector with at least three years at a supervisory level
