Program description:
 This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. Due to its continued growth, the program has vacancies in the HIV Counseling and Testing Program – Provider Initiated testing and Counselling (PITC)

Essential Requirements

  • Higher National Diploma in counseling
  • Trained in HTC Counsellor Supervision
  • Trained in Provider initiated Testing and Counselling
  • Excellent and proven written and verbal English
  • At least 2 years of clinical experience working in a clinical setting
Desirable Qualities
  • Experience supervising HTC Counselors.
  • Experience with working in a MOH district hospital, health care facility or dispensary
  • Experience in field work and public health research
  • Experience dealing with difficult situations related to sensitive interpersonal issues related to HIV and moving around area despite bad weather and road conditions.
  • Couples, pediatric and family testing experience
Job Summary: The Counseling and Testing supervisor, will supervise the PITC counsellors who are providing provider initiated testing and counseling services in selected facilities in Nyanza.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide support supervision to counsellors performing Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling Services in Nyanza Province.
  • Promote/strengthen the provision of psychosocial support in health facilities
  • Supervise collection and recording of data on persons undergoing Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling services, to ensure quality and accuracy
  • Effectively and appropriately manage sensitive situations in the field, such as HIV discordant couples, that the counselors cannot handle on their own
  • Ensure that patients’ privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
  • Make sure appropriate referrals for HIV care and treatment are being made.
  • Provide professional support and advice to counselors.
  • Report and provide assistance to supervisors within other KEMRI/CDC programs as needed.
  • Perform other duty as may be assigned by management
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Health
Terms of Employment: Contract for 1 year, renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first 3 months. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
