Job Title: Kenya Finance Manager

Position Summary:
Human Needs Project (HNP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in 2012 in the United States and 2013 in Kenya. 

HNP is looking for a Finance Manager to lead and manage finances and accounting protocols at the Kibera Town Centre,an 8,000-square-foot building in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. 

This is a full-time position and reports to the Kenya Country Director and the U.S. Chief Financial Officer. 

He/She will be expected to travel locally as needed to perform vendor and bank relations, as well as other responsibilities.

The Finance Manager will have a unique chance to get involved in one of the world’s most promising new ideas in building neighborhood resilience in Kibera. 


The Kibera Town Centre provides clean water, toilets and showers, as well as adult education, skills training, micro-lending and internet access in Kibera.

A Kenya Finance Manager will be a vital asset in helping us to operate all accounting, payroll and cash services for approximately 30 staff and 10+ vendors in Kenya. 

He/She will manage QuickBooks, produce financial statements, manage bank accounts, and lead all accounts receivable and payable transactions, and help us to develop cost allocation tools that optimize revenue and expenses.

Supervises
  • One staff person directly: Assistant Accountant.
  • Purchasing and supplies personnel
  • Oversee the Point of Sale staff
Compensation Package: Human Needs Project offers a competitive salary and benefits package in Kibera. Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Key Responsibilities

Financial Transactions and System Creation
  • Develop, implement, modify, and document record keeping and accounting systems in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, usingcurrent software and technology.
  • Prepare forms and manuals for accounting and bookkeeping personnel, and direct their work activities.
  • Provide guidance in filing of financial transactions in the office.
  • Authorizing of requisitions in regard to payments and signing checks in consultation with reporting authority.
  • Provide supervision of all financial transactions and ensure that proper account ledgers are updated in the accounting system (QuickBooks both Kenya and USA).
  • Lead all payroll management and administrations.
  • Provide supervision on stock controls and re-ordering.
  • Survey operations to ascertain accounting needs and to recommend, develop, and maintain solutions to business and financial problems.
  • Establish and revise work methods, forms, formats, and standards to improve operating efficiency.
  • Ensure that financial weaknesses identified within the organization are addressed quickly and adequately to help ensure better management of resources.
  • Ensure that financial explanations are provided in a way that are easy to understand for non-finance team members.
  • Provide training on finance management to team as needed.
  • Ensure that comprehensive advice is provided to address individual problems or issues.
  • Obtain necessary financial and tax advice from relevant specialists to enable accurate information when needed and to make informed decisions.
Financial Controls, Compliance and Security
  • Lead all audit, verification, and processes to ensure employee’s expense claims are accurate and review rules with employees to maintain 100% compliance.
  • Provide oversight on filing of all statutory deductions to the Kenyan government.
  • Keep updating the organization on laws that affect the organization in regard to finance as well as business.
  • Create efficient internal controls to minimize fraud. Draft financial policies. Educate employees on being aware of fraud and how to comply with controls.
  • Maintain banking relationships.
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Safeguard company assets through periodic assessments of their state, condition and availability by maintaining an asset register.
  • Secure financial information by completing data base backups.
  • Protect operations by keeping financial information confidential.
  • Check on compliance of the organization pertaining to financial duties.
Budgeting and reporting
  • Budget and forecast monthly and annual cash flow positions and revenue and expense.
  • Ensure that sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and capital investment requirements.
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statements, and other reports.
  • Prepare and file monthly reports for the Kibera Town Centre and HNP USA. Prepare management accounts and any ad hoc reports to offices.
  • Work closely with both internal and external auditors to facilitate annual audits.
  • Develop reports that will guide in business evaluation.
  • Provide cost management in order to ensure profit is being achieved for each service.
  • Implement cost control and cost-cutting measures to avoid losses.
  • Provide oversight, manage and respond timely to debtor and creditor management
Other duties applicable.

Desired Qualifications
  • A Finance Manager will have at least 6 years of professional accounting and management experience, including leading the finance and administration of small to large companies or nonprofits.
  • S/he will have experience or passion towards creating and driving the analytic framework for measuring profit and loss of products and services.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience in customer service and collaborating in a diverse and dynamic team.
  • At least 3- 5 years’ experience with legal, audit, compliance, budget, and resource development.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Proven effectiveness in leading and teaching professionals in finance and accounting.
  • Technologically savvy: experienced using QuickBooks and all Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Flexible and comfortable with remote work culture.
  • Able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented.
  • Candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting.
  • C.P.A section 4 and above will be an added advantage.
