Our
client, The M-PESA Foundation Academy is a state of the art, mixed boarding
high school that provides world class Kenyan education, driven by leadership,
entrepreneurship, technology and innovation.
Great
focus is given to entrepreneurship and leadership, giving the students’ time to
learn outside of the classroom, explore the arts and take part in sports and
music. The Academy serves talented but economically disadvantaged students with
demonstrated leadership potential.
The
Academy cultivates the students’ abilities to innovate irrespective of their
academic strengths or weaknesses. As such, students work with teachers and one
another to design projects that can solve real world challenges.
Students
who graduate from the Academy will be leaders in their fields of interest such
as business, academia, politics, sports, music and the arts. They will be the
entrepreneurs and community leaders who will drive Kenya forward.
In February 2016, The Academy admitted its first ever students.
The
M-PESA Foundation Academy is seeking to recruit dynamic and visionary
individuals with exceptional skills in the following capacities,
1.
Procurement Officer (PO/05/2016)
The
Procurement Officer will be responsible for the efficient coordination and
management of all procurement and logistics functions for the Academy; and
implementing the procurement and transport strategies to support the Academy’s
overall strategy
Key Responsibilities
- In
liaison with the Head of Facilities, develop and implement procurement
policies and procedures of the Academy, implement internal controls that
are in line with the policies and procedures;
- Implement
the procurement process for the Academy, and manage and control the
procurement budget to maximize savings;
- Review
stock management system to determine re-order requirements, identify the
most suitable supplier from the pre-qualified suppliers;
- Receive
approved requisitions and prepare and dispatch LPOs as needed for
provisions and follow up to ensure timely delivery;
- Monitor
unfilled orders and if necessary consult requisitioning managers for
alternative specifications, or to guide on alternative suppliers;
- Ensure
quality products are sourced and supplied at the best prices;
- Collect
and collate information/statistics in preparation for negotiations and
renewal thereof of service contracts for equipment and machinery;
- Coordinate
the printing and ordering of stationery, price reviews on all types of
stationery, obtaining quotations from suppliers to facilitate negotiations
for good prices;
- Verify
bills against orders before forwarding for authorization and eventually,
payment by Finance department;
- Ensure
that the vehicles are maintained and are in good working conditions by
liaising with the service provider, maintain usage records and monitor to
ensure adherence with service level agreements;
- Monitor
fuel consumption and maintenance costs to ensure they are within budget;
and
- Any
other duties assigned from time to time.
Person
Specifications
- Bachelor’s
degree in Procurement or Supply Chain Management;
- Three
years’ procurement and contract management experience, preferably in an
academic institution;
- Possession
of a professional procurement qualification, such as C.I.P.S;
- Registration
with KISM;
- Ability
to write narrative and analytical spread sheet reports;
- Proven
computer literacy in MS-Word, MS-Excel MS-Access or related programs
required;
- Ability
to plan, prioritize, coordinate and perform multiple tasks
simultaneously;
- Ability
to work under pressure and to meet deadlines;
- Spoken
and written fluency in English desired; and
- Willingness
to put in extra hours in emergencies.
2. Safety
and Security Officer –
(SSO/05/2016)
The
Safety and Security Officer will be responsible for the compliance of all
security and safety standards at the academy; building up the capacity,
awareness and preparedness of staff and students to deal with security-related
risks, threats and incidents through the delivery of high quality, regular
trainings / briefings.
Key
Responsibilities
- Work
with the Security Committee, Faculty, Operations and Head of Security and
Safety to ensure the implementation of MFA Security/Safety strategy in the
School, as well as achieving annual security/Safety objectives
(Security/Safety Road Map);
- Assist
in providing the Academy with a safe and secure working environment as
well as safeguarding the internal operations from external security
threats, and internally from malpractices;
- Conduct
and update risk and threat assessments relevant to the Market, and provide
early warnings regarding National or local threats that may affect MFA’s
operations;
- Consolidate
security related data from the School before reporting to the Head of
Security and Safety, and present to security committee proposals for
achieving security/safety objectives and any budgetary implications in
line with the Security Road Map;
- Promote
attitudes change of staff and student in matters of security through the
relevant safety and security trainings;
- Liaise
and network with Security Managers in other institutions of learning,
organizations and government bodies, to ensure that MFA is able to draw
upon the experience and knowledge of others; and
- Ensure
that losses due to fraud and theft as well as any security-related
incidents are promptly and fully reported by the Security Guards and
Security supervisors, and passed to the Head of Security and Safety.
Person
Specifications
- Bachelor’s
degree in Safety/Security related course or its equivalent;
- At
least three years’ work experience in similar position in a learning
institution;
- Experience
from disciplined forces will be an added advantage;
- Must
be computer literate;
- Ability
to work in a rapidly changing environment with a view towards establishing
procedures and protocols that will ensure optimal functioning of the
Security Unit;
- Knowledge
on use of HF and VHF radio CCTV control systems, electronic security
systems an added advantage; and
- Strong
skills in staff supervision and training.
3.
Teaching Faculty and Other Related Positions (TE/05/2015)
Teaching
Positions: Teachers
support, observe and record the progress of their class. They also plan lessons
in line with national 8-4-4 curriculum, with the aim of ensuring a healthy
culture of learning.
The
Academy seeks to recruit teaching faculty who have depth of knowledge and able

Key
responsibilities
- Ability
to prepare and deliver schemes of work, lesson plans and lesson notes
based on current curriculum and syllabi; records of work,
teaching/learning aids, and assess learners;
- Administer
examinations on time as per the academic calendar, provide feedback to
learners and prepare and maintain learners’ progress records;
- Individualized
education programs;
- Ability
to manage teaching time through; punctual and consistent class attendance,
observance of the school time table and attendance of other school
activities and staff meetings;
- Ability
to improvise and use locally available resources for effective teaching
and learning outcomes by integrating technology in teaching and learning
process;
- Manage
student behavior in the classroom and on school premises;
- Undertake
counselling duties and supporting pupils on an individual basis through
academic or personal difficulties;
- Promote,
organize and guide co-curricular and life skills activities to learners to
enable them realize/nurture unique talents and develop them to their full

educationalists, parents/guardians, local communities; and

1.
Laboratory Technician -
(LBT/05/2016)
The
Lab Technician will provide full technical support to teaching staff, enriching
the learning experience by preparing and setting up practical lessons in
Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as stock taking, making requisition,
handling deliveries, invoices and keeping lab financial records.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare
solutions, equipment, apparatus and specimen within the ministry of education
Health and Safety guidelines;
- Set
up of lab equipment apparatus and specimen requested by the science
teaching staff and assemble them out during normal lessons and exams;
- General
Laboratory cleaning including bench surfaces and fixed equipment (laboratory
sinks, emptying/supervising the emptying of sink traps) after each lesson,
and any chemical spillage;
- Ensure
safe disposal of waste materials from practical lessons;
- Store
and label chemical, equipment and apparatus in an orderly and safe manner;
- Ensure
proper functioning of lab equipment;
- Keep
equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting
breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance,
calling and arranging for repairs;
- Ensure
adequate supply of chemicals and specimen through timely
requisition;
- Provide
technical support to experienced and trainee teachers including health and
safety implications of all laboratory techniques and chemicals used, and
raising awareness of health and safety issues to staff where necessary;
- Uphold
the highest level of confidentiality and integrity of internal and
external assessments;
- Collect
specimen for learning;
- Research
and identify emerging trends in science and technology and create
awareness within the academy;
- Display
laboratory models, specimen and wall charts in cabinets;
- Take
part in science activities, and assist learners in carrying out of science
research projects;
- Keep
files of confidential reports of past examinations;
- Develop
a virtual science laboratory to facilitate learning; and
- Keep
record of breakages, loses and damages of laboratory apparatus.
Person
Specification
- A
Higher National Diploma in Laboratory Technician (with specialty in
Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or its equivalent; a degree will be an
added advantage;
- At
least 5 years’ experience as a laboratory technician in a comparable
institution;
- Ability
to provide technical support to the teaching staff including health and
safety implications regarding laboratory techniques;
- Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Demonstrably,
planning and organizational skills and ability.
2. School
Nurse -
(SNS/05/2016)
The
School Nurse is charged with the responsibility of maintaining and operating
the Academy clinic.
Key
Responsibilities
- Manage
and coordinate the Academy’s health services program based on requirements
established by the Academy’s policies, procedures, and protocols, and by
the Ministry of Health regulations;
- Provide
basic medical services and First Aid to both the staff and students and
organize referrals to specialist when necessary;
- Carry
out regular surveillance checks on the students to ensure their continued
health;
- Maintain
clinic equipment and assess and ensure the supply of consumable supplies
on an ongoing basis;
- Organize
for students’ treatment at the approved hospital by the Academy;
- Monitor
and administer student medication administered at the Academy as
prescribed by the doctor;
- Order,
record, store drugs in line with the Academy’s policy;
- Issue
to students’ common user drugs as per medication condition;
- Assess
and evaluate the health and developmental status of students for the
purpose of identifying physical disorders and other factors affecting the
learning process;
- Design
health maintenance plans for the purpose of addressing student’s health
needs;
- Keep
student medical records;
- Refer
students requiring further medical attention as per the Academy
guidelines;
- Respond
to medical emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate
safety concerns;
- Report
students with reportable contagious disease to the Director teaching and
learning; and
- Liaise
with the local health authorities to keep abreast of any updates on
regulatory changes and public health alerts.
Person
Specification
- Bachelor
of Nursing degree or diploma in nursing from a recognized medical training
institution;
- At
least 5 years’ experience in a similar role;
- Good
communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Experience
in inventory management to ensure that there are no stock outs.
