Role: Director, Health Markets
Reports To: Country Director
Liaises With:Country Management
Team
Duty Station:Support Office,
Nairobi with constant travel to field sites.
Leading a
cross-functional team, this role will focus on the following
1) strategic
management and development of the Marie Stopes Social Franchise branded
“Amua”;
2) strategic
management and development of demand generation activities;
3) strategic
management and development of social marketing activities – including MA
OOC.
In all aspects, cross
functional collaboration and teamwork will be essential.
As a member of the
country management team (CMT), the Health Markets Director will contribute to
the shaping and fulfillment of MSK’s strategic direction.
The Director will work
collaboratively with other CMT members to ensure operational synergies are
optimized through cross-functional working.
He/she will also work
closely with the Director of Programmes and Country Director to build and
maintain excellent donor and stakeholder relations, including the development
of new business for MSK.
The Director will
oversee a growing department, with direct line management of the Amua Social
Franchising Manager, the Manager, Social Marketing and the Demand Creation
Manager.

1. Strategic
leadership of the Amua social franchise
Being accountable for
and providing leadership and oversight to the Social franchising Manager and
his team to:
- Improve
or put-in-place robust systems and processes to support operations of the
franchise network.
- Recruit
and retain highly motivated and high-performing team-members who are
passionate about private sector development for health.
- Ensure
that Amua achieves objectives related to high-quality provision of family
planning and reproductive health services and measured through CYPs and
QTA scores
- Strategically
manage relationships with ‘competing’ entities including optimizing Amua
development in a positive and conducive environment.
- Manage
the expansion of the Amua network to be the leading franchise for SRH
services, ensuring franchises are well stocked and report real numbers to
MSK’s data warehouse.
- Ensuring
that the programme is evidence based, learning from operational research
to match activities with the best possible outcomes
- Managing
the programme in accordance with targets in donor agreements, ensuring
compliance with indicators, and management of agreed activities in
accordance with a budget.
2. Strategic leadership of Demand generation
- Improve
or put-in-place systems and processes to develop MSK’s demand generation
function.
- Expand
the impact and role of demand generation activities for family planning
(LAPM) and reproductive health
- Managing
the programme in accordance with targets in donor agreements ensuring
compliance with indicators, and management of agreed activities in
accordance with a budget.
- Compliance
with contractual obligations, including close out of projects in
accordance with contractual obligations.
- Ensure
that the programme is evidence based, learning from operational research
to match activities with the best possible outcomes.
3. Strategic leadership of Social Marketing and MA OOC
- Ensure
the effective and efficient management of the social marketing projects.
- Development
of the Misoclear MA OOC programme, adjusting the mechanism for
distribution of Misoclear as the market develops.
- Ensuring
that the social marketing programme is evidence based, learning from
operational research to match activities with the best possible outcomes
and inform future marketing and distribution strategies.
- Strategically
manage the pricing and packaging of products (Misoclear, condoms,
pregnancy test kits etc) in line with market opportunities, external
environment and market forces to generate sufficient income and achieve
sustainable growth.
- Ensure
promotional and BCC activities are positioned to optimize high brand
recall and uptake of products.
- Oversee
management of sales infrastructure and distribution systems and expand to
MSK’s products to new areas and increase access.
- Manage
the MA OOC programme in accordance with targets in donor agreements
ensuring compliance with indicators, and management of agreed activities
in accordance with a budget.
4. External Relations, Advocacy and resource Development
- Manage
and promote the corporate image of MSK as the leading SRH organization in
Kenya.
- Represent
MSK to external organizations including local, national and international
government agencies, NGO/INGO officials, ministries and beneficiary
groups.
- Develop
and strengthen relationship with other SRH stakeholders in Kenya and
maximize opportunities for collaboration to the benefit health market
programmes and MSK.
- Mobilize
resources for an increased method mix, with a view to generating
sufficient income to create a sustainable health market business model.
- Ensure
strong partnerships with the Ministry of Health and district health teams
(DHTs).
- Ensure
strong partnership and collaboration with religious forums, professional
bodies and other public sector that expand public-private partnership
opportunities.
5. Leadership of MSK as CMT Member
- Contribute
to the strategic direction of MSK
- Take
ownership with other Directors for the implementation of the MSK Strategic
Plan and Business Plan
- Identify
best-practice, innovations and integration with other MSK’ service
delivery channels and support functions to increase access to high-quality
services.
- Ensuring
that the programme is evidence based, learning from operational research
to match activities with the best possible outcomes.
- Active
member of the CMT and SMT
- Work
with line reports to develop a good team spirit, based on MSK core values,
within the Department and teams, including team members in the field.
- Build
and maintain excellent relations with donors and stakeholders including.
- Provide
leadership to the Private Sector Partnerships team, by ensuring the
successful and proper execution of recruitment, training, induction,
appraisal and motivation of all team members, in liaison with corporate
services directorate (People and Development team).
- Provide
mentorship to MSK staff to develop skills and performance
Job Requirements
- Management
professional.
- MBA;
other business, finance or project-management qualifications. [Experience
may compensate for qualifications].
- Health
services qualification [DESIRABLE]. MPH, health promotion, or relevant
technical qualification.
- Minimum
5 years progressive work-experience, including evidence of leadership
roles
- Minimum
3 years of client-facing experience. A strong background working on
client-care and improvements to client satisfaction.
- Presentation
skills – ability to present complex information to a broad public in an
accessible and professional manner
Skills:
- Outstanding
communication and training skills – your skills will include a diversity
of training techniques.
- Highly
numerate – 5 years of budget management responsibility.
- Accountancy
qualification [DESIRABLE]
- Highly
articulate and analytical with attention to detail.
- Knowledge
of current health context in Kenya. [DESIRABLE]
- Written
work of a publishable standard [DESIRABLE]
