Quality Assurance Manager


The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Quality Assurance Officer to maintain a Quality Management System (QMS) thus ensuring GLP/GCP accreditation under ILRI’s newly developed Contract Research Organization (CRO) unit.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.


The Program
ILRI is in the process of developing a Contract Research Organization (CRO) arm to provide services to internal and external research projects utilizing its animal research facilities. To ensure the delivery of efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance (VICH GCP) and time lines, ILRI is looking for an experienced person in charge of quality assurance and compliance of all CRO activities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance to relevant guidelines, Controlled Documents and study plans/protocols by performing:
  • Study specific audits on the critical phases identified for a study;
  • Audits on study plans/protocols and final study reports, including amendments;
  • System/facility and process audits as per audit plan;
  • Directed audits as requested and delegated by Head of Quality Assurance
  • Perform Subcontractor and Outsourced Company evaluations and audits as requested and delegated;
  • Prepare and issue audit reports and document findings, observations and critical findings;
  • Perform reviews of Controlled Documents.
  • Develop, recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions and communicate to relevant management;
  • Manage Controlled Document deviations and Change Control Plans;
  • Manage the Master Schedules;
  • Support Sponsor audits and Regulatory inspections performed at ILRI;
  • Support in the training of personnel in GLP and GCP principles and of Quality Assurance SOPs;
  • Maintain internal training compliance;
  • Manage the department’s compliance to accreditation, legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Manage reporting employees with the intent to promote a culture that reflects the organization’s values, encourages good performance and rewards productivity;
  • Observe the correct reporting, remedial and corrective actions to be followed by following set instructions and procedures to report and correct any non-conformance issues.
  • Execute other tasks and activities as delegated by the supervisor;
  • Work in close collaboration with ILRI’s EOHS (Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety) department
Qualifications
  • MSc. or equivalent qualification in biological or natural sciences; and
  • Sound knowledge of GLP and GCP quality systems;
  • At least 5 years’ relevant experience;
  • Expertise in animal health, animal welfare, biosecurity, bio-safety issues, and the 3Rs (Refine, Replace and Reduce) concept associated with animal health research.
Terms of Appointment
This position is at job level HG 15. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances

Director of Gender Platform

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a visionary, dynamic, and creative Director for the CGIAR gender platform.
CGIAR (www.cgiar.org) is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food-secure future. Our research is carried out by 15 Research Centers who are members of CGIAR and is dedicated to reducing rural poverty, increasing food security, improving human health and nutrition, and ensuring more sustainable management of natural resources.
Impactful gender research within CGIAR is a precondition to achieving its mission of enabling people, especially women, to better nourish their families, while improving food system productivity and resilience. In the face of climate change and demographic shifts, such research has become more important than ever before, and is now essential for shared economic growth, manage natural resources and improve the lives of women and men.

The Platform
The gender platform, hosted by ILRI in Nairobi, brings together CGIAR centres and numerous partners from around the world in a collaborative effort to make CGIAR the thought leader for gender in agricultural research for development (AR4D) and support the transformation of agriculture and food systems to be equitable, sustainable and climate resilient. The GENDER Platform aims to (1) generate high-quality research-based evidence to influence the broader AR4D ecosystem to integrate gender and achieve gender-equal outcomes (2) create an enabling environment in which gender equality is embraced as a core principle in priority setting, research and communication within CGIAR and its partners, and (3) facilitate the capacity development of CGIAR and its partners to carry out gender-integrated and gender-strategic research that is transformative and strengthens global, regional and national food systems. The Platform builds on and expands the work of CGIAR’s current gender platform.
Responsibilities
  • Inspire and engage the gender researchers within CGIAR and beyond to develop and nurture a Platform that is inclusive and contributes to excellence in gender research in the CGIAR, ensuring transparency and accountability in Platform functioning.
  • Provide intellectual and management leadership for the Platform, ensuring that all components are coherent, function well and meet their milestones.
  • Set strategic research priorities for the Platform, with the guidance of the advisory committee and working closely with the Platform science leader, management committee, the module leaders, CGIAR science leaders, and other CGIAR platforms.
  • Lead the process of organizational change in CGIAR and its key partners to integrate gender equality as a core principle, working closely with the gender research coordinators in each centre, centre management, CGIAR science leaders and CGIAR Systems Management Office.
  • Identify and establish key research, development and policy partnerships and alliances, including with donors, governments, regional and subregional bodies.
  • Design and lead periodic critical reflections to facilitate adaptive management of the Platform to remain relevant and effective.
  • Mobilize resources for the Platform from established and new funding partners.
  • Oversee coordination of work plans, budgets, reporting, quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation among participating centres and strategic partners.
  • Supervise Platform staff.
  • Lead broader communication for the Platform, including by providing guidance to the development and implementation of Platform communication and capacity development strategies.
  • Represent the Platform externally and within the CGIAR system and contribute to system-level functions.
Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant discipline, such as gender studies, sociology, anthropology, agricultural economics, economics, political science, or other social sciences
  • Internationally recognized expertise in gender in agriculture and food systems research including a peer-reviewed publication record on gender & agriculture/NRM
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience, including research management experience, in an international, multidisciplinary, and multicultural environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills including building consensus among diverse institutional partners and stakeholders
  • Experience from within CGIAR would be an advantage
  • Ability to connect evidence from research to development and policy and to get those options into development and policy dialogues
  • Exposure to Africa, Asia and/or Latin America
  • Proven fundraising record
  • Proven expertise in leading collaborative and cross-cutting research
  • Familiarity with the current state of knowledge, policy, and practice across the Platform’s research agenda
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Developing country nationals are encouraged to apply
  • Fluency in English, with proficiency in other international languages preferred

Research Operations Manager

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Study and facility operations Manager to be responsible for the management of study and facility operations under the ILRI’s newly developed Contract Research Organization (CRO) unit.

The Program

To ensure the delivery of efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance (VICH GCP) and time lines, ILRI is looking for an experienced person to manage the animal facility operations, resources scheduling and animal facility compliance to applicable standards ensuring good quality work, delivery and in a cost-efficient manner.
 Responsibilities
Study and animal facility operations
  • Guides the development of study plans, protocols and ethics applications to high-quality in line with compliance and time lines
  • Develop, validate and execute novel study models to high-quality in line with compliance and time lines
  • Act as Study Investigator/Director on multiple specialties of GCP, GLP and non-standard studies to deliver efficient and high-quality research in line with compliance and time lines
  • Team lead duties which includes management of a team, resource scheduling, updating of departmental worksheets and general management duties in line with good people practices and in accordance with departmental objectives
  • Ensure compliance in the use and verification of relevant equipment
  • Ensure compliance in the recording and handling of raw data
  • Observe the workplace rules at all times and report non-conformance to the relevant person as to ensure that all activities in the workplace are compliant with company rules, policies and procedures
  • Supervise and implement biosafety and security protocols to maintain a clean, orderly and audit ready facility at all times
  • Ensure the handling and storage of chemicals and laboratory consumables are efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable to ensure compliance.
  • Observe the correct reporting, remedial and corrective actions to be followed by following set instructions and procedures to report and correct any non-conformance issues
  • Perform specific study related and/or study conduct tasks by following set instructions and procedures to ensure safe and successful study practices
  • Supervise and implement study administrative tasks by following set instructions and procedures to ensure safe and successful study delivery
  • Ensure the adherence to specified internal and external compliance and legislative standards, requirements and practices
  • Administration of veterinary products to animals actively being utilised in a study inclusive of drugs utilised for concomitant therapy
  • Manage animal facilities by following set instructions and procedures to ensure and promote good animal husbandry practices resulting in content, well-adjusted and cared for animals;
  • Managing various aspects of feeding of animals by following set instructions and procedures in order to maintain healthy animals and reduce feed expenses;
  • Ensure the standards of cleaning of animal housing, equipment and facility is followed as per set instructions and procedures to prevent contamination, maintain and optimise animal health and wellbeing and to achieve and maintain a clean, orderly and audit ready facility at all times;
  • Manage and control pest infestation by following set instructions and procedures to eliminate harbourage zones, prevent infestations and pest diseases vectors and to ensure a safe, bio-secured healthy environment for animals;
  • And any other duties that may be assigned to you.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Natural or Biological Science;
  • At least 5 years’ research experience and 7 years’ investigator experience.
  • Expertise in animal health, animal welfare, biosecurity, bio-safety issues, and the 3Rs (Refine, Replace and Reduce) concept associated with animal health research.
  • Expertise in VICH GCP and GLP
  • Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams
