Renewable Energy Sector Team Lead

AECF has exciting opportunities for the role of Sector Lead for Renewable Energy.

Job Purpose:

 Provide the strategic vision and technical direction for the Renewable Energy & Climate Technologies (REACT) portfolio that promotes rural development and fosters more equitable and sustainable economic growth in Africa within the quickly evolving framework of the economic program.
Key Responsibilities: 
The Sector Team Lead – Renewable Energy & Climate Technologies will be responsible for technical programme development and overall management of AECF REACT across Africa. He/She will consult regularly with the director, donors and engage with the senior government officials, other donors and international organizations. Others include:
Leadership and Strategic Direction (10%)
  • Lead development of REACT Investment Portfolio, aligning it to the AECF strategy and continental sector priorities, development and growth agenda.
  • Develop overall operating plans, management plans, work plans and budgets for the renewable energy and climate technologies (REACT) portfolio.
  • Ensures that investees meet their obligations in accordance with agreements and relevant regulations.
  • Ensures that activities achieve their intended results. Provides technical and organizational leadership on the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities.
Relationship Management & Business Development (20%)
·        Establishes and maintains productive working relationships and linkages with donors, and other development partner organizations, government departments, private sector partners etc. Establishes close links to sector leaders, international organizations, associations or businesses.
·        Participate in meetings and events that create visibility and positive image of AECF.
·        Lead AECF team in development of technical bids and proposals to prospective funders.
·        Leverage expertise and networks to support fundraising and business development efforts of AECF. This includes contributing to proposal development and pitches to donors;

Sector Management (40%)
·        Provides technical expertise to assure alignment of the REACT portfolio with evolving sector development policies, government development objectives, other donor programs, and foreign policy priorities
·        Provide technical leadership for the marketing, application review and selection of REACT projects
·        Responsible for the overall planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of REACT portfolio, including multiple contracts, cooperative agreements, interagency agreements, and host country contracts
·        Coordinate and manage effective competition design and implementation
·        Develop effective strategies the enable recovery of outstanding repayable grants as due from portfolio investees
·        Lead development and implementation of portfolio risk framework, in line with the overall AECF Risk and Compliance Management Framework
·        Custodian of REACT portfolio performance data.
M&E Learning (10%)
  • Contribute to development and review the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) and Learning strategy.
  •  Lead / coordinate the portfolio learning agenda in a manner that contribute to the wider learning agenda of AECF (in liaison with HQ M&E team), to further the reputation and capability positioning of the Fund, have a wider systemic impact on the relevant market systems in Africa, and promote relevant advocacy efforts.
  •  Ensure continuous improvement of the portfolio quality based on learning.
Team Management (20%)
  • Responsible for the effective flow of communication within the REACT team, as part of the Investment Portfolio Management Team.
  •  Manage employee performance e.g. weekly/monthly continuous performance discussions and provision of feedback. Translate strategy into executable plans while motivating your team with clear direction by setting clear goals and KPIs.
  • Guide teams in implementation of agreed strategy and programs, including enhancing coherence at team level.
  •  Engage their employees and manage diversity within the workplace by encouraging and personally participating in employee engagement activities.
Requirements
  • Graduate/Masters qualification in Business Administration, Economics, Development Studies, Sustainable Energy, Resource Economics, Agricultural Economics, or other relevant field of study.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience and recognized expertise in Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Climate financing and Renewable Energy Financing.
  • Project Management certification (PMP or Prince 2) is desirable.
  • Proven experience working in the development sector, managing multiple donor/ funder engagements.
  • An understanding of the operations of donors and international development organizations.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills with the ability to prepare proposals, reports and concept papers to a high level of proficiency.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement. Language skills in French will be an added advantage

Legal Manager & Board Secretary

Since 2008, AECF has invested in 268 businesses across sub-Sahara Africa focusing on Agribusiness, Renewable Energy and Climate Technologies. As of 2018, we have impacted more than 17 million lives, created over 12,000 jobs and leveraged over US$ 560 million in matching funds from the private sector.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Legal Manager and Board Secretary shall ensure the integrity of the governance framework, be the principal legal advisor to the institution, and assure that the organization fulfills its legal, regulatory and ethical responsibilities.
Key responsibilities
• Manage relationships and all issues relating to the Board of Directors and Shareholder, including convening Board, and Committee Meetings;
• Ensure compliance by the AECF with best Corporate Governance Practices including risk identification and mitigation;
• Lead on all legal aspects of the organization’s investmentstransactions, both structuring and execution, review and negotiation of the full range of deal documentation.
• Ensure that investment and related agreements accurately reflect negotiated terms and draft legal documents in support of investment deals.
• Lead in the negotiation of donor funding agreements and structuring of partnerships between AECF and key relations including in-country partners.
• Develop the annual risk work plan that reflects the institution’s highest risks to be monitored as determined by conducting a mandatory annual risk assessment using an enterprise wide approach and ensure an effective monitoring system is in place.
• Develop a clear annual grants compliance plan and monitor AECF’s compliance obligations with respect to donor requirements and liaise with key stakeholders to ensure alignment ofsuch requirementsto the greatest extent possible with AECF’s policies and best practices.
• Implement and manage AECF country registrations and provide legal advice in relation to country governance and operational documents.
• Provide legal, compliance and tax advice to AECF and specifically on transfer of domicile to a US public charity 501 (c) (3).
• Take initiative to identify and analyze problems, generate alternative solutions and make decisions with little direction/supervision.
Requirements
• A Bachelor of Laws degree and post graduate diploma in law/legal practice certificate.
• A master’s degree in law or related field.
• A minimum of 7 years’ experience in a major law firm or the legal department of an asset manager, development finance institution or other leading organization.
• Transactional experience in investment funds a big plus
• Strong technical legal and commercialskills.
• Ability to oversee and effectively manage outside counsel and internal stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work with others and manage multiple time sensitive matters in a demanding, fast-paced and fluid environment.
• Ability to take initiative to anticipate, identify and analyze issues, generate potential solutions and make decisions.
• Exceptional interpersonal, analytical, written and oral communication skills – must be able to resolve complex issues in a practical manner and to communicate complex concepts in an understandable way.
• Goal Oriented – seek to understand and personally contribute to the mission and future direction of AECF, translate the organisational strategy into practical initiatives and solutions; creative and innovative in achieving the goals of the organisation.
• Understanding of the investing in SMEs landscape and a passion for working in-house.
• Ability to balance big picture thinking with intense execution, always prioritizing and
moving initiatives forward.
*Board Secretary professional certification not mandatory but experience supporting a highprofile international board is an added advantage.

Job Summary:
Provides programmatic and administrative support to the Donor Relations activities in AECF team in the execution of its core business. The position requires a commitment to quality control, accuracy and follow-up. The successful candidate will be exposed to situations requiring considerable discretion, judgment, tact, diplomacy and timely responsiveness.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and draft proposals and concept notes for all AECF programs as needed;
  • Maintain records of reports due to donors on ongoing AECF programs and report on status of reporting
    deadlines on an ongoing basis.
  • Undertaking research to generate donor briefs about aid policy and priorities of potential partners and
    donors;
  • Providing logistical, administrative and operational support for the department to prepare for
    missions, meetings and events;
  • Oversee all Donor Relationship/Business Development related events – including donor meetings,
    partnerships and other meetings relevant Resource Mobilization and draft agenda and other
    documents needed for the events/meetings.
  • Take good notes at each meeting; capturing the key areas for follow up and ensure follow up with
    donors and team as discussed in respective meetings.
  • Support the team in donor identification/prospecting through outreach; development and updating of
    donor database.
  • Creating and implementing a standard pre-planning process to be used for all identified new
    prospects.
  • Program Delivery – works closely with other staff to ensure that the program delivery is at par with
    donor expectation. Sits on program taskforces as required.
Required qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Project management, Business Administration, Economics or political science
    from a reputable institution.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as marketing, communications, public administration,
    international relations and Development Studies will be an added advantage.
  •  Minimum of 7 years’ experience in resource mobilization for large multilateral or bilateral agencies or
    international organizations primarily in Africa. Experience in relevant AECF sectors preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience at a management position in a donor development and resource
    mobilization role.

Investment Analyst

The AECF is a non-profit organization, unlocking the potential of the private sector to positively impact
the lives of rural and marginalized communities in Africa. With the vision to build ‘’A prosperous and
Enterprising Rural Africa’’, AECF provides high-risk, small and growing businesses with patient, low-cost
financing and advisory support services to pilot, refine and scale their operations and ideas.
Through the advisory support services, we help our portfolio companies to prepare for and attract followon funding to enable them grow and scale, using “AECF Connect” which was established with support
from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Since its inception, AECF Connect
has supported 12 investees (through 18 transactions) to raise US$ 45 million. We’re now going through
unprecedented growth at the moment – new funds, new portfolio companies, new geographies and an
energized team to help get us there. Key to the forward momentum is increasing our investment
readiness and facilitation services, a key market gap for our portfolio companies and other SMEs in subSaharan Africa.
Purpose of the role:
The Investment Analyst will work primarily on screening and evaluating investment-ready portfolio companies and support them through investment transactions and due diligence. You will also be involved in supporting portfolio management, portfolio performance tracking, and assisting the Investment Advisory team with investment research while contributing as needed to other tasks and internal assignments. The role will see the Investment Analyst work closely with Portfolio Officers, who are responsible for the design, structuring, onboarding and subsequent management of the AECFs investment projects.
The role requires a good understanding of the investment space in sub-Saharan Africa, a financial modeling guru and a business growth expert, all in one. The ideal candidate for this role should be selfdriven, results-oriented and action-focused with an affinity for impact investing and be willing to excel in a highly entrepreneurial environment.
Key responsibilities:
  • Conduct extensive due diligence, reference calls, researching industry sectors, interviewing the
    founding teams, analyzing historical financials and checking financial models to assess investment
    readiness and support investment negotiations.
  • Provide technical investment advisory support to the portfolio team while undertaking due diligence
    and contracting of investees
  •  Participating in investment negotiations, including financial valuation and return analyses discussions
    and making informed decisions.
  •  Contribute to the development and implementation of operational plans and analytical tools to drive
    service delivery efficiencies through continuous review of processes and systems towards building an
    efficient investment facilitation process.
  •  Apply creative and critical thinking to identify and implement ways of increasing the efficiency of the
    AECF’s investment and portfolio management processes.
  •  Conduct industry and market assessments and reviews for key investment trends and proactively
    inform the growth of the organization.
    Stay abreast of key developments in the Finance Investment space and resource allocation
    innovations and interventions in sub–Saharan Africa, in order to inform technical support activities.
    This includes frequent interaction with stakeholders various levels relevant to this area as well as
    multilateral partners and performing market research, data mining, business intelligence, and
    valuation computations
  •  Understanding macroeconomics and external factors affecting the business strategies adopted and
    markets serviced by AECFSupport engagement with new investors suitable for meeting our portfolio
    companies’ capital needs.
  •  Periodically evaluate progress towards the completion of project deliverables to verify alignment with
    strategic directions and defined targets in liaison with the Knowledge and Insights team. Ensure
    excellence within-budget and on-time delivery of activity and financial results and reports.
Required experience, qualifications and skills:
  • Up to 4 years work experience in a financial institution, particularly in investment banking, venture capital, management consultancy; experience working in and with early and growth-stage companies in sub-Saharan Africa strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance or Business from a recognized university.
  • Professional qualification in Finance ( CPA, ACCA) or related field is mandatory
  •  Certified Financial analyst (C.F.A.) or other applicable certifications will be an added advantage
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills able to detect trends early and use industry expertise to
    identify ways to captialise on these opportunities.
  •  Attention to details and ability to make sound decisions.
  •  Computer savvy and having the ability to develop complex financial models and analyse them.
  • Familiarity with data query/data management tools is extremely helpful (Access, SQL, Business
    Objects)
  •  Keen interest in development finance and multicultural environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Fluency in English required proficiency in additional languages – French is preferred.
