Job Title: Programme Manager
The Open Institute, a nonprofit organization that works to build the capacity of communities, seeks to hire a program manager to help designs and facilitate community-level programming, provide tailored technical assistance services, and offers a range of support to community groups and funding organizations by supporting the Global Goals for Local Impact (GGLI) program.
About Open Institute: The Open Institute was established by in 2012 to promote Open Government in Kenya and globally as well as to experiment and develop ways to promote citizen engagement and participation.

The founders of the Open Institute have been at the forefront of Kenya’s ICT development since 2006 when they led the citizen process of the development of Kenya’s ICT policy.
In May 2011, the duo led the process of the establishment of the Kenya Open Data Initiative (Al Kags was the Chair of the taskforce). Since the establishment of the Open Institute, we have worked towards the strengthening of citizen engagement practices in Kenya.
We have, in doing so, worked to build the capacity of the media to better use data in developing narratives for development, built the capacity of other civil society organisations on Open Data, and worked with citizens to develop use-cases for data.
Progressively, we have found that we are more impactful when we work directly with citizens and with governments at subnational and hyperlocal levels. This has grown to be our emerging focus over the past two years. We have also continued to contribute to global and continental processes relating to transparency, accountability and citizen engagement.
About GGLI: The Global Goals for Local Impact project has been ongoing in Lanet Umoja location, for the past 10 months. The goal of the project is to establish the relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals at village level and to promote citizen engagement and participation in the development of development priorities and the budgetary process at local level using citizen generated data.
Over the past 10 months we have successfully piloted the project in Lanet Umoja location and we now intend to scale this project up to at least six other locations.
General Responsibilities:
The Program Manager plays a central role in the development and coordination of the Open Institute Global Goals for Local Impact programmatic activities.
The Program Manager works independently and collaboratively with the Open Institute staff to plan, manage, and implement activities in the following areas: program implementation, oversee research and evaluation, meeting design and coordination, grant/contract management, grant and report writing, and publications/materials development.
Other responsibilities include supporting communications activities, serving as liaison and Open Institutes representative at meetings, and establishing and maintaining partnerships to advance the Open Institute’s mission.
The Program Manager position requires sub-national level community engagement experience, as well as excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills.
Work duties may include, but are not limited to:
·         Participate in long- and short-term program development and planning.
·         Develop and effectively manage program timelines to ensure timely completion of program deliverables.
·         Monitor program activities to ensure quality and accuracy of Open Institute’s work outcomes vis-à-vis contractual and grant commitments.
·         Manage and coordinate programmatic meetings including managing logistical contractors.
·         Facilitate small- and large-group meetings and trainings.
·         Provide technical assistance to community-based organizations.
·         Develop publications, grant applications, and reports through collaborative writing and editing.
·         Manage relationships with contractors.
·         Participate in Open Institute’s strategic planning activities.
·         Identify partnership and funding opportunities and promote relationship-building among Open
·         Institute and other organizations, agencies, and/or individuals.
·         Develop and disseminate programmatic and marketing materials.
·         Develop PowerPoint presentations and other materials for use during program-related events.
·         Develop written and online tools for programmatic use including survey and evaluation instruments.
·         Identify technological tools to enhance and support Open Institutes capacity and programs.
·         Serve as programmatic liaison to external partners, including representing Open Institute at national, regional and local meetings.
·         Adhere to Open Institute’s administrative and recordkeeping guidelines to support accurate bookkeeping and documentation of activities.
Education and Experience:
·         Graduate degree in a field related to program management or a minimum of seven (7) years experience working on management, and/or community-based issues.
·         A strong understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals.
·         Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups on complex community issues
·         Track record of grants and program management
·         Knowledge of and interest in technical assistance and communications
·         Willingness to engage in continuous learning and training
·         Demonstrated professional and political aptitude
Salary Range & Benefits: Salary is contingent upon available funding, and is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Job Location: The position is based in Nairobi, and requires the employee to work at the Open Institute office as well as to perform field work.
Travel: Domestic travel to project locations is required for this full-time position. Estimated travel: 30-50% annually.

Job Title: Senior Developer
Job Description: Open Institute is looking to hire a Senior Developer who is passionate about writing great code to join our talented team on a full-time basis. Reporting to the Head of Technology, the ideal candidate will be a skilled full stack developer and have at least five years industry experience.
Your role as part of our development team will be to deliver systems, websites, portals and applications, working with modern technologies and techniques, a variety of content management systems (off-the-shelf and custom) and toolkits.
Your primary focus will be the development of all server-side logic, definition and maintenance of databases, and ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front-end.
You will also be responsible for integrating the front-end elements built by your co-workers into various applications and platforms.

Your Work

·         Create and implement an array of web-based solutions in an agile environment

Your Skills:
·         Strong hands-on development and experience in PHP and MySQL, Responsive Design dealing with HTML, HTML5, CSS, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap and API development (including AJAX and JSON)
·         Experience in object-oriented design, version control and third party services via APIs
·         Experience with NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase, etc is an added advantage
·         Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R
·         A deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, and a track record of releasing production quality software on time
·         Possess strong problem-solving and analytical skills, diligent and reliable

Job Title: Developer
Job Description: Open Institute is looking to hire a Developer who is passionate about writing great code to join our nascent talented team on a full-time basis. Reporting to the Head of Technology, the ideal candidate will be part of our development team and have at least 3 years of industry experience.
Your role will be to d esign and develop software applications (apps), with a strong focus on applications for mobile phones, Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

Your Work
·         Creatively architect, design, develop and deliver complete front-end, independent and/or database linked mobile apps in an agile environment, to meet the goals and requirements of various projects with minimal bugs.
·         Manage the full software development life cycle including testing, implementation, and auditing.
·         Perform product design, bug verification, and beta support, which may require research and analysis, in collaboration with other team members (including data analysts and UI/UX designers).
·         Cooperate with back-end developers in the process of building RESTful API’s.
·         Participate in weekly scrum meetings, technical design review sessions and specification review (functional and technical) sessions.
·         Contribute to the scalability of existing platforms by making sure that code can run smoothly on multiple devices.
·         Improve the overall performance of existing apps by finding bottlenecks, recommending enhancements, conducting maintenance and fixing bugs
·         Implement new features on existing apps (backend and frontend)

Your Skills:
·         A Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent practical experience
·         Experience with Android Application Development Environments (at least 2+ years of experience)
·         Experience working with remote data via REST and JSON, third party libraries and APIs
·         Experience developing native Android platforms: Android SDK, Android Visual studio, and Proguard
·         Experience in Android application development from scratch
·         Proficiency with JavaScript, AJAX, JSON and HTML5
