Farm Manager Job in Kenya

Duma Works is recruiting a Farm Manager for one of our clients. 

The farm is a 15 – acre transitional horticultural farm located in Machakos. 

The company grows horticultural products for the export market and are currently growing french beans and baby corn, to meet high levels of demand for vegetables in the export market. 

It plans to expand and increase the product offering to Asian fruits and vegetables.

Job Purpose: The Farm Manager will  oversee the operations and ensure that the farm is operating efficiently – meeting the expected quality, quantities on schedule and within the budgeted costs.


Routine tasks
  • Communicate with the Operations on a daily basis via Daily activity report in order to prepare and plan tasks
  • Provide thorough reporting on daily/weekly/monthly activities  with clear articulation of  accomplishments and challenges; and recommended solutions
  • Establish short term and long-term priorities.
  • Manage all aspects of Farm Production in conjunction with Agronomist & CEO
  • Promote all policies and procedures established and outlined by the business.
1.    Plan, implement, and complete daily and long term farm production tasks with Agronomist
2.    Utilize all casual staff to accomplish goals.
3.    Accomplish tasks through delegation to staff members.
4.    Establish performance and productivity standards for each task delegated to a staff member.
5.    Evaluate, review, and give feedback for each task assigned to a staff member.
6.    Insure that staff members are meeting performance and productivity standards. If not, provide input, correction, training, and innovation to assist them in meeting goals.
7.    Establish monitoring systems for delegated tasks to insure completeness of task. ( Use the forms provided)
8.    All financial transactions should be accompanied with documentary evidence of receipts or petty cash vouchers
  • Maintain good records utilizing computer skills and proficiency
  • Responsible for all crop production on the farm including fruits.
Responsible for:
  • Planning-selecting planting schedules, varieties, and quantities.
  • Planting-insuring that all plantings are completed on time.
  • Pest I.D., control, applications, and records.
  • Harvesting, inventorying, proper rotation of inventory,
  • Quality control for all production.
  • Purchasing supplies necessary for production in liaison with operations manager.
Human relations
  • As a direct representative of the business, must always exhibit respect for all coworkers, supervisors, and customers.
  • Company policies and procedures, as well as directives from the GM, must never be negated nor criticized in front of other staff members.
  • Hire, Supervise, and terminate production employees as necessary to fulfill priorities established by the business and remain within the company annual budget.
  • Develop and maintain weekly production staff member schedule.
  • Responsible to develop job descriptions and training procedures with the HR & Operations Director
  • Responsible to train, review, evaluate, and provide constructive input to improve performance of employees.
  • Implement pay scales in accordance with the GM.
  • Insure that staff members know who is in charge when and whom they should report to.
  • Insure that staff members who are place in roles of responsibility know who they are supervising and what tasks they are overseeing.
  • Provide for systems that insure proper watering and disease control.
  • Must know status of projects
  • Promote good employee morale and teamwork.
  • Identify and resolve problems and potential problems.
Communication
  • Promote and maintain good customer relations. Would be responsible for all aspects of the farm’s production operation
  • Communicate all issues to GM; report on actions taken for resolution.
  • Assist with farm tours and special events as needed.
  • Additional farm responsibilities as needed.
Job Characteristics
  • Full time position
  • Generally a six day work week November through May
  • May need to work off hours for during harvest tine and other special or emergency tasks.
  • Long work days are sometimes necessary during the busy months.
  • May be called upon during off hours for information or guidance and must be available.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Agricultural or horticultural field ( must have)
