Accountabilities: Under
the direct supervision of the Senior Staff Assistant, Country Director’s
Office, with technical supervision of the Fleet Management Assistant and the
overall supervision of the Admin. Officer, the incumbent will perform the
following duties:
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide
reliable driving services to the Head of the Office, senior WFP staff and
high ranking UN officials and visitors in accordance to authorised routing
following UN safety and security rules and regulations;
- Meet
official personnel at the airport as required;
- Collect
and deliver mail, documents and other items and assist in distribution of
newsletters and publications, paying of office bills and assist unit staff
in filing, photocopying.
- Take
care of the day-to-day efficient maintenance of the assigned vehicles,
checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tyres, etc and ensure that the
vehicle is kept clean before and after travel.
- Ensure
that the assigned vehicles are kept in good running condition at all times
by performing minor preventive repairs and making necessary arrangement
for servicing and repairs;
- Log
official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, and servicing done to
ensure completeness of vehicle operation log book records;
- Negotiate,
liaise and co-ordinate with local authorities to facilitate smooth running
of vehicle movements in designated areas;
- Provide
translation of basic information from the local language into an official
language for the Head of the Office and UN staff in the vehicle;
- Take
the steps required in accordance with the rules and regulations in case of
an accident;
- Perform
other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Successful
completion of Primary School Education (KCPE). Completion of Secondary
School Education (KCSE) and/or qualifications in motor mechanic, first aid
or defensive driving will have an added advantage.
- Be
in possession of a valid Driving Licence class B, C, E with excellent
knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
- At
least three years’ proven & continuous work experience as a driver
with a safe driving record.
- Experience
in using HF and VHF radios.
- Experience
in driving and maintaining different makes/models of diesel and petrol,
saloon and 4-wheel drive vehicles.
- Should
be trustworthy, have a high sense of responsibility, be alert, physically
fit and emotionally stable.
- Should
be polite and willing to take and carry out instructions. Must be tactful,
punctual and able to use common sense.
- Good
knowledge of the duty station, current conditions of roads and highways
and familiarity with the frequently travelled routes and routines of the
senior WFP staff.
- Ability
to work independently and exercise good judgment in difficult situations.
Ability to use discretion and initiative.
- Should
be able to work effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds
within and outside WFP.
- Good
spoken English and Kiswahili.
