Massive Recruitment in a Kenyan Hotel (9 Positions)

Our client is a new player in the hospitality industry specifically operating high end serviced apartments near the Arboretum/State House area in Nairobi.

We are seeking applications from highly dynamic and well exposed candidates who are available to fill the following positions from December 2011:

Hotel General Manager 


The jobholder will be responsible to the investors and owners of the establishment.

His/her role will include:

  • Ensure the provision of excellent guest services
  • Oversee all the operations of the serviced apartments
  • Supervision of the staff in all departments including front desk, accounts, sales and marketing, food and beverage
  • Management of relationships and contracts with external suppliers or service providers
  • Management the relationship of key corporate or individual clients
  • Manage the facility and ensure protection of all the assets

  • Degree/Higher Diploma in hotel management
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in the hospitality industry
  • Team management and leadership experience in a hotel environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with strong ability to create the right impression as well as market the hotel to potential clients
  • Computer literate
  • Well developed customer/guest relationship skills
  • Accounts knowledge will be an added advantage

This is a role responsible for undertaking accounting functions and producing financial statements.

The role holder is expected to perform undertake the following duties:
  • Preparing financial reports in accordance with accounting standards
  • Preparation of company annual quarterly and monthly budgets and management accounts
  • Ensuring timely preparation of accurate monthly expenditure reports
  • Monitoring and interpreting cash flows and predicting future trends
  • Researching and reporting on factors influencing business performance
  • Ensuring cost minimization and income maximization
Minimum Criteria: 
  • Degree in Accounting from a recognized University
  • Professional Accounting qualified i.e. CPA(K), ACCA or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years experience of accounting duties
  • Experience in the Hospitality industry is an added advantage
  • Excellent proficiency and working knowledge in computerized accounting packages (especially used in hotels) and MS Word applications
  • Strong analytical and numeracy skills with ability to interpret data
  • Attention to details with excellent coordination skills
  • Honest and hard working, with high ethical standards
  • Highly motivated, energetic, analytical, self-starter, able to work independently.
  • Effective communications skills, both orally and in writing

Sales and Marketing Executive 

(Kshs.35,000/= + incentives)

This is a position with key role of undertaking sales and marketing activity targeted to potential clientele.

  • Degree in Commerce or Marketing or equivalent
  • 3 – 5 sales experience in hospitality or services industry with proven track record of success in sales
  • Strong communication skills with strong ability to create the right impression that persuade clients

  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • High degree of honesty and integrity
  • Should be flexible and highly mobile to undertake field sales activities


This is a position with the key role of planning, directing, and supervising the food preparation and cooking activities of the kitchens or restaurants at the property.

It involves coordination of the work and activities of other staff members as well as motivating them at work.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Developing a relevant restaurant menus, maintaining high and consistent standards in food quality and service
  • Coaching, training and developing other kitchen personnel ensuring high performance standards
  • Plan and price menu items and food/beverage costs
  • Establish working procedures or processes for all kitchen functions
  • Verifying safety or conformance to standards in work procedures
  • Determine food presentation styles creating decorative food displays
  • Demonstrate new cooking techniques and equipment to staff
  • Adhere to all HACCP Hygiene Management System and health safety standards.
Skills and specifications
  • A Diploma in food production
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience working with food
  • Highly organized with a high level of creativity
  • Experience in training and coaching staff
  • Keen sense of taste and smell and must enjoy food preparation
  • Must be clean, neat, and healthy
  • Numeracy skills.

(4 positions)

This is a position with key role of receiving and attending to guests and ensuring their comfort.

  • Diploma in front office operations
  • 2 years front desk/receptionist experience preferably in hospitality industry
  • Excellent communication skills with strong ability to create the right impression
  • Customer relationship skills i.e. helpful, friendly and patient attitude

  • Ability to accurately record information
  • Great attention to detail
  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • High degree of honesty and integrity
  • Willingness to work on shift basis


The overall purpose for this job is ensuring excellent customer service for clients: ensuring total satisfaction of the customer from the time he/she enters the establishment up to the time they leave.

This involves receiving customers warmly; presenting them with menus and offering assistance in menu selection if need be, billing the customers and checking to ensure customers are enjoying their meals and service.

Minimum requirements for the position are:
  • Certificate/Diploma in a hospitality course
  • Good pass in O level English and Mathematics
  • 1 year’s experience working as a waiter
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic knowledge about food and food service
  • Excellent preventability with patient attitude
  • Well organized, presentable and ability to work under pressure.


The key role of this position is to mix and serve drinks from the bar directly to customers or through the waiters/waitresses.

The jobholder’s responsibilities include:
  • Check patrons' identification in order to ensure that they meet minimum age requirements for consumption of alcoholic beverages
  • Responsible for controlling bar stock including ordering supplies, maintain an inventory of supplies, stock taking and preparation of consumption reports
  • Responsible for cash float, presentation and settlement of bills
  • Preparation and serving of cocktail drinks
  • Serve customers in a friendly and helpful manner.
Skills and specifications:
  • Good pass in O level in English and Mathematics
  • Minimum 2 years experience in a similar position
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Numeracy skills
  • Must have full knowledge of beverages and experience in preparation and service of cocktail drinks.
General Handyman 


This is a role required to undertake general repairs and maintenance within the establishment

Minimum requirements for the position are:
  • Minimum Diploma or certificate in related field of electrical/mechanical/plumbing work
  • Demonstrable prior hands-on experience in similar setting
  • Personal organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills with patience
  • Ability to read directions and follow instructions
  • Good communication skills in English and/or Kiswahili


This position involves facilitating all operations of the kitchen including maintaining all areas of food preparation stations and food storage areas, cleaning dishes, pot, pans, utensils, food preparation machines, floors, working surfaces and any other duties as directed by the Chef.

Minimum requirements for the position are:
  • Must have completed “O” level education
  • Exemplary organizational and multi-tasking abilities
  • Attention to detail especially in cleaning
  • Mechanical skills to operate electric machines
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and physical flexibility
  • Basic understanding of food preparation is desirable
  • Good interpersonal skills with patience
  • Ability to read directions and follow verbal instructions
  • Prior experience is desirable.
