Veterinary Epidemiologist - ILRI Jobs in Kenya

ILRI seeks to recruit a Veterinary Epidemiologist as part of the ILRI Research Theme on Livestock Market Opportunities. The emphasis of this position is on risk analysis for food safety in livestock product markets, particularly in the informal and traditional market systems that are important for small holder producers in Africa and Asia.
The epidemiologist would work within a multi-disciplinary team that includes market economists, and institutional and social scientists on projects with a strong action research orientation, including piloting of innovative strategies to reduce food safety and animal disease transmission risks within livestock supply chains. Project areas include multiple counties in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

The responsibilities of this position will include the following:
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments within livestock product supply chains related to both animal disease transmission and food safety risks from zoonotic diseases.
  • Play the lead technical support role to action research projects that explore innovative market-led technical and institution strategies for risk management and communication in livestock product markets, and other projects with a food safety or risk assessment element
  • Lead or support the development of proposals for food safety in livestock product markets and value chains, for domestic and export

Applicants should possess:
  • PhD in Epidemiology, Microbiology, Public Health, Food Safety or a related subject
  • At least two years post-PhD experience working on food-borne disease or zoonoses research in developing countries
  • Skills in qualitative and quantitative microbial risk assessment using the Codex Alimentarius and/or OIE framework and
  • Good general quantitative and qualitative epidemiology skills including surveys, risk factor analysis, statistical modeling, and intervention studies
  • Experience with diagnostic tools, molecular epidemiology, spatial epidemiology and participatory methods an advantage
  • Experience in working on multi-disciplinary teams to address complex problems in developing countries
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage)
  • A strong publications record, including peer-reviewed journals;

Post location:The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required.

Terms of appointment: This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with initial appointment of three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive international remuneration package paid in US dollars.
