Senior Veterinary Epidemiologist/Team Leader - ILRI Jobs in Kenya

ILRI seeks to recruit a Senior Veterinary Epidemiologist and Team Leader to play a key role in ILRI’s evolving and expanding portfolio of research addressing zoonotic diseases and others at the interface of agro-ecosystems and human health, with emphasis on further developing and applying One Health/Ecohealth paradigms that bring together human, animal and environmental health in both analytical approaches and in interventions.

Key responsibilities:
  • Build and lead a multi-disciplinary team of ILRI staff and CGIAR partners within a new CGIAR Mega Program on improving human health and nutrition through agriculture-based interventions
  • Lead conceptual development of ILRI’s work on improving human health through understanding and managing livestock, and wildlife determinants of health
  • Build collaborations with relevant institutions and organizations to address Ecohealth issues
  • Supervise and support collaborative Ecohealth research in a range of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
  • Develop proposals to raise resources to support new research employing Ecohealth approaches and other research on the interface between livestock, wildlife and human health
  • Contribute generally to the development of the animal health program in ILRI
Requirements:
  • PhD in epidemiology, environmental science, public health or a related ecohealth-relevant degree
  • At least eight years post-doctoral experience working on zoonoses/ecohealth research in developing countries
  • Demonstrated quantitative epidemiological skills including most, or all of, field surveys, clinical trials, risk factor studies, multi-level statistical modeling, spatial epidemiology
  • Experience with disease prioritization, disease burden assessment, nutrition, participatory methods, gender analysis, impact assessment and risk analysis an advantage
  • Experience of working in multi- and trans-disciplinary teams
  • Track record in obtaining and managing research funds
  • Publishing 1-2 peer reviewed papers a year plus other communication products (working papers, research and policy briefs, training materials etc)
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage)
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently, sometimes to rural areas in developing countries.
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required.

Terms of appointment: This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with initial appointment of three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive international remuneration package paid in US dollars.
