Safe Water and Sanitation for All - Design and Testing of Market Based Solutions and Business Models - Request for Expressions of Interest

““Safe Water and Sanitation for All” is a program being developed by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, to support market-based approaches for the delivery of safe water and sanitation services.

Beginning in Kenya, the program will engage with partner organizations to address existing barriers to commercial service delivery in the sector, and facilitate the design and testing of business models that have the potential to achieve significant scale.

Successful interventions and business models that show promise, especially in reaching underserved consumers at the “base of the pyramid,” will receive support for replication and scale up in Kenya and possibly in other regions.

Target products and service models include vended water systems, point-of-use water treatment devices, and sanitation services.

In line with this objective, IFC is currently requesting expressions of interest from organizations interested in testing in Kenya the commercial viability of market-based solutions to the delivery of water and sanitation services with replication potential.

Support will be available for the testing and piloting of viable business models, and the development of replication plans for models that are considered scalable.

In order to maximize IFC’s unique private sector financing capabilities, the interventions supported are expected to include a finance component.

To express interest, organizations are requested to prepare and submit the following information:

  • Background on organization and key staff, including details of experience in the water and sanitation sector within the East Africa region and an overview of any contribution towards private sector development.
  • A short concept note (maximum 3 pages) briefly outlining: the proposed business model and supportive market intervention(s), current progress achieved (if applicable for an existing model), scale up concept and methodology, a summary of the main activities to be financed, expected results, a timeline for these results, and an estimated budget.
