Sign Language Interpreter

Job Purpose
The key objective of this
position is to facilitate communication between hearing and hearing
impaired individuals through sign language. As an interpreter, you must
understand the subject matter of discourse so you can accurately translate
what is being said into sign language and sign language into spoken language.
Main Responsibilities
- Providing
a full range of interpreting/transliterating services for deaf/hard of
hearing (HoH) members and employees;
- helping
hearing impaired individuals understand the proceedings of the plenaries
and committees of the Assembly;
- Interpreting
any conversation, meeting, and training session or other requested event,
including providing oral interpreting to Members and Staff who do not use
sign language;
- Responsible
for interpreting in a variety of communication modes during assembly-wide
work related events such as programs, conferences, and appraisals, and
counseling sessions, etc. for specific training needs and benefits;
- serve
as a liaison between County Assembly and the deaf community;
- skill
in a variety of signed languages, Contact Sign, and Conceptually Accurate
Signed English, CASE) to facilitate communication;
- Enlighten
Member and staff on Deaf Culture and interpreter services;
- Identify
process improvement opportunities to improve on services to Assembly
customers; and
- Any
other duty as may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications
- Served
as a sign language interpreter for a minimum period of two (2) years;
- A
bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
- Certification
in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) from a recognized institution – Advance
stage;
- Fluency
in English and Swahili languages;
- Proficiency
in computer application; and
- Shown
merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
Terms of Appointment
Members of Audit committee
shall be appointed for a term of 3 years on part time basis and shall be
eligible for re-appointment for a further one term only.
The term should only be extended after
performance of the member has been reviewed.

employee/agent of Kirinyaga County Government / Assembly or holder of a
political office
