Communications Specialist, USAID/Kenya and USAID/Somalia Communications and Development Support

Project Summary:
This anticipated 5-year
project will support the implementation of Outreach and Communication
Strategies, as well as regional communications for USAID/Kenya and East Africa
and USAID/Somalia. The project will use strategic communications approaches to
engage stakeholders within Kenya, East Africa, and Somalia on U.S. Government strategic
objectives.

Position Summary:
The Communications
Specialist will participate in the full scope of strategic communication
support tasks including the development and production of information products
and publications, event coverage, field work, photography, social media
management, strategy development, videography and writing with an emphasis on
digital and social media platforms. This position will report to the Deputy
Chief of Party and work full-time at MSI’s office in Nairobi.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain
a clear understanding of the Mission’s bilateral and regional portfolio
and structure, as well as Mission and Agency communications objectives.
- Develop
a social media strategy that articulates the role of social media in
achieving the mission’s communications strategy and outlines how platforms
are managed for USAID.
- Assign
to staff and follow up on content development, ensuring appropriate tone
and relevance of messages to programmatic priorities, and managing
partner-generated content.
- Coordinate
closely with the client, MSI teams, and implementing partners (IPs).
- Develop,
plan, and conduct social media campaigns on a quarterly basis
- Draft
original social media messaging and toolkits with proposed text,
corresponding links, and appropriate images on a daily basis.
- Develop
and maintain a list of e-newsletters, websites, blogs, and other reputable
sources of content for use by colleagues.
- Lead
the automation and optimization of social media performance measurement
and optimize content based on algorithms and insights, leveraging SEO,
hashtags, acronyms, emojis, etc. to drive further visibility and
engagement.
- Set
KPIs for campaigns and develop monthly, quarterly, and annual analytics
for all managed platforms.
- Work
with the Data Scientist to develop an automated system of culling
analytics into real-time dashboard.
- Develop
and deliver general and advanced social media training for IPs and comms
staff on advertising, content development, analytics, etc.
- Set
up social media advertisements and buys within the budget and provide a
return on investment for ad spend.
- Contribute
to the professional presentation and execution of communications products
and services and contribute to systems to track metrics/indicators.
- Produce
compelling, relevant content that adheres to USAID branding and style
guidelines.
- Interpret
and tailor complex, technical content and make it understandable
for different audiences.
- Participate
in and contribute to presentations, strategy, and performance review
meetings.
- Be
a part of the editorial and creative process, bringing new and creative
ideas to the table based on expertise and research.
- Conduct
interviews, take photos, videos, and otherwise support field work.
- Work
with other photographers and videographers to capture human interest
stories.
- Review
relevant reports, news articles, social media handles, and other online
information in preparation for tasks or to provide feedback to client.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s
degree in a relevant field is required.
- Social
media or digital marketing certifications are preferred.
- Minimum
five years of relevant professional experience in journalism or public
relations, including demonstrated experience in digital technologies such
as Meta Ads, Twitter Ads, Brandwatch or others is required.
- Knowledge
of digital (websites, social networking, email and blogging), photography
and videography to seamlessly apply to multiple scenarios is required.
- Experience
working and traveling in Kenya and in-depth understanding of Kenyan
culture, geography and development issues is required.
- Experience
working with non-governmental organizations, donors and/or agency or mass
media is preferred.
- Experience
in building the capacity of others on how to develop content for social
media is preferred.
- Experience
with managing influencers and user-generated content is preferred.
- Strong
written and verbal fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.
