Position: Accountant

Malaika Africa is a mobile technology and data science company that is changing the way credit scoring and financial services work around the world. 

The system enables lenders to lend to borrowers through a mobile platform. 

We are looking for a detail-oriented and dynamic accountant with experience working in a rapidly growing, hands-on, start-up environment. 

This position requires excellent communication, an ability to think critically and creatively, attention to detail and a team-oriented attitude. 

Main purpose: To provide the overall leadership of the finance department including development of relevant financial policies, preparation of financial statements, financial reporting and implementation of financial controls among other related financial related activities.

The responsibilities of the role:

Reporting:
  • Preparation of timely and accurate company's financial statements, monthly management reports, monthly general ledger results,
  • Ensure the correctness of the systems to provide accurate financial information,
  • Preparation of cash flow statements.
Budgeting and forecasting:
  • Preparation of budgets,
  • Compare budgeted/forecasted results to actual results in order to identify inaccuracies,
  • Maintenance and revision of the forecast model and budget to actual analysis.
Compliance:
  • Preparation of tax compliance and compliance with other statutory requirements i.e VAT, Corporate tax, NSSF, NHIF etc
  • Develop and ensure adherence of company’s policies and procedures i.e. in invoice processing, cash management, and petty cash and general expense policies.
Assets management:
  • Maintain and review fixed asset registers,
  • Accrual reconciliations and proper working capital management
  • Daily cash management
Financial Management and Controls
  • Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Advising the management team on business financial decisions as well as issues relating to accounting policies and procedures; financial management and control; planning and analysis and implementing of company’s financial and accounting policies
Payments: Monthly running of payroll, timely payment of expenditures 

Requirements:
  • CPA Section 6 or ACCA finalist
  • 3+ years experience in the accounting and finance sector.
  • Experience with managing multiple entities.
 Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience with Sage Pastel
  • Conscientious about timeliness of assignments and quality of work product
  • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to articulate recommendations in a concise and timely manner
  • Able to handle multiple tasks and maintain control and order over same
  • Good grasp and appreciation of IFRS and IAS and financial reporting technical skills
  • Exceptional work ethic.
