Job Title: 
Projects Coordinator

Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland. Should be willing to spend at least two month intervals in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Reports to: BBC WST Country Director Kenya and Somalia (based in Nairobi)

Contract duration: 12 months fixed term contract with possibility of extension depending on future funding

Desired Starting date: As soon as possible but not later than 1st May 2011

Salary: Competitive salary (depending on qualification and experience)

Job Purpose:

The BBC WST is seeking a Project Coordinator to be based in Hargeisa, to assist in managing all
aspects of the projects in Somalia under supervision of the Country Director.

The Project Coordinator will be part of a team consisting of International Trainers, Researchers, finance/ admin staff, and local Journalism Training Mentors.

He/ she will assist to oversee the delivery of the projects, including liaising with donors and making sure that project activities are implemented in a timely and effective manner.

Main Duties:
  • To handle co-ordination with partners on allocated projects, including the local partner organisations, local radio stations, the journalist associations and project donors.
  • To deliver narrative reports on project implementation to the Trust in London and to project donors as required.
  • To liaise with other donors and partners towards developing new projects and securing funding in areas in which the Trust is working (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/trust/whatwedo/). .
  • To manage production and research teams.
  • To oversee the recruitment of additional staff when needed.
  • To liaise with the research team both in London and in Somalia to ensure delivery of assessment and research elements of projects on time and within budget, providing all necessary assistance to them.
  • To ensure that findings from research and audience feedback are used to refine and improve project outputs.
  • With the support of the Trust’s senior trainer and producer, to ensure that all programming and training meet the highest BBC standards, as well as delivering the project’s development objectives.
  • Regular travel to Hargeisa when necessary and - if security situation allows - at short notice if required.
  • To meet all contractual requirements of the projects Donors – ensure media production by coordinating the activities of the producers in the field to ensure editorially correct and timely submission of assignments.
  • Translation of documents from Somali to English and vice versa
Required knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Strong experience in managing projects in East Africa essential (either development projects or specific media development/ training projects) - At least 3 years experience in a similar role.
  • Relevant higher education preferably in development studies, project/ business management, mass communication or other relevant educational background.
  • Computer application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet user skills.
  • Some experience of media work highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to issues of governance and transparency.
  • Strong understanding of Somalia and the role and position of Somali media.
  • Strong understanding of the role of media and communications in development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a difficult and highly politically sensitive environment.
  • Strong English language skills are required, knowledge of local languages an asset.
  • Must be fluent in Somali
