Communications Officer


Job Purpose
  • Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor -Academic & Student Affairs, the Communications Officer will be charged with the responsibility of planning, developing, implementing and evaluating communications plans that raise the profile of USIU-Africa and demonstrate communications best practice. 
Key Responsibilities/Tasks

Develop, Implement and Evaluate External Communications Plans to Support Communications Priorities by;
  • Building and executing effective and dynamic external communications campaigns with the support of internal communications officer.
  • Identifying external communication gaps and solutions.
  • Working with faculty and student affairs team to generate stories and conversations that build the image of the University positively.
  • Creating stakeholder maps and refreshing them regularly based on internal and external influences.Seek Out and Write Stories that Demonstrate the Impact of USIU-Africa in the Community and Globally Through the Following;
  • Developing processes and channels for seeking USIU-Africa stories within East Africa and globally.
  • Creating seamless synergy within the Student & Academic Affairs office and the Marketing & Communication office.
  • Working with faculty to make their research relevant in the mainstream media such as op-ed pieces and setting up interviews.
  • Research and push for publication of compelling stories about USIU-Africa for internal and external use.To Support Media Relations and Event Communications
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with regional and local media houses to showcase USIU-Africa’s activities and impact.
  • Coordinate logistics and liaise with media for on-site events and promotions.
  • Support all communications initiatives for USIU-Africa’s events.Event Planning & Management
  • Plan and manage campus wide events that are well thought out and aligned to the USIU-Africa brand and within the allocated budget. 
Minimum Educational/Professional Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or equivalent, from a recognized university;
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in communications, marketing, media relations, public relations or related field;
  • The candidate must have photography skills;
  • Demonstrated experience with digital and print communications;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Demonstrated experience creating successful communications plans;
  • Demonstrated experience with communications best practice;
  • Understanding of stakeholder engagement and meeting stakeholder communication needs;
  • Event management experience;
  • Experience in brand building;
  • Knowledge of web content management and can write and update content on various University digital assets;
  • Knowledge of the media industry with contacts within various media organizations,;

Security Chief Manager

Job Purpose
The holder of this position will be responsible for the effective management of USIU-Africa’s security services to ensure the University’s management of security is soundly developed, properly executed and systematically monitored in compliance with the requirements of the national regulations and as per the University policies.
Key Responsibilities/Tasks
  • Develop, implement, review and maintain a viable security strategy for the organization to ensure an effective & efficient security process across all the USIU-Africa premises;
  • Develop, implement and maintain the security program to ensure its effectiveness through regular evaluation;
  • Formulate an overall security policy for Management Board approval;
  • Develop and promulgate security standards and practices;
  • Effective liaison, coordination and networking with governments, authorities, law enforcement agencies, relevant national and international agencies and security stakeholders;
  • Ensure an effective risk analysis, threat assessment and response capability;
  • Initiating special security measures during periods/instances of increased threat;
  • Ensure that all critical areas of security concern are adequately covered in the security plan and are effectively managed, monitored and controlled;
  • Comply with the security guidelines to ensure maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and USIU-Africa standards;
  • Represent the University in operational, coordinative and consultative security meetings and forums;
  • Continuously assess the Security Management Systems (SEMs) to ensure that all defined elements are functioning effectively;
  • Ensure good working relationship with the Government, Security and Intelligence Agencies for up to date information;
  • Develop and implement a security training program to continuously sensitize each USIU-Africa member on their role and responsibility for security at the university in order to achieve a security culture and ensure efficient handling of security matters;
  • Prepare, monitor & control the security budget to ensure effective cost control;
  • Undertake regular audits, research, surveys and investigations to continuously improve security management through regular review of policies, procedures and processes in relation to findings;
  • Source and monitor the effectiveness of third-party security services;
  • Responsible and accountable for all quality control matters of the security department;
  • Provide specialized advice to the Director Administration in all Security functions, protection, Intelligence, information and investigation;
  • Provide timely and updated reports on all cases and incidents including the requisite recommendations to the Management Board for information and decision making;
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all regulatory requirement, organization standards and local security procedures;
  • Monitor trends on issues relating to drugs & psycho-substances and take corrective measures. 
Professional and Educational Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Social Sciences / Criminology / Law / Public administration from a recognized institution.
  • 10 years of relevant experience in a security role, 5 of which should be in a senior security leadership role in a reputable international organization.
  • Comprehensive understanding of National and International Security environment, security issues and trends.
  • Competency and demonstrated experience in the use of IT security system.
  • Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic leadership and networking with major national and international organizations.
  • Knowledge of Higher Education environment.
  • Knowledge of Laws of Kenya including the constitution of Kenya 2010 and all relevant laws of Kenya.
  • Membership of relevant professional body in the security sector e.g. Certified Fraud Examiner.

Development Officer

Job Purpose
The Development Officer will be in charge of establishing a robust coordination mechanism with USIU-Africa’s stakeholders to achieve overall effectiveness in fundraising.
Key Responsibilities/Tasks
  • Maintaining partnerships and networks for donors, alumni and volunteers;
  • Planning, implementing and promoting fundraising programs that support USIU-Africa’s strategic intent and Schools’ priorities;
  • Profiling and advancing Schools’ flagship projects and events;
  • Identify and research for fundraising and grants opportunities that match USIU-Africa’s strategic intent;
  • Communication and engagement of USIU-Africa’s current partners and prospects to facilitate solicitation for grants, donations, partnerships and sponsorships;
  • Maintain active records for all existing funders and keep track of pledges and donations accurately at the school level;
  • Prepare draft case statements for fundraising activities and provide institutional information for grant applications;
  • Plan, implement and monitor fundraising programs at the schools in accordance with existing university guidelines, and mobilize participation from all actors;
  • Provide precise information about ongoing fundraising programmes for sharing in USIU-Africa’s formal communication channels and social media, for sustained donor interest and alumni giving;
  • Carry out due diligence on potential fundraising partners to promote compatible and sustainable partnerships, in accordance with existing university guidelines;
  • Recruit and manage volunteers to participate in various fundraising activities and promote active participation in fundraising by USIU-Africa’s internal stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of CARS

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of software to enable automation of fundraising and grant tracking
  • Must have presentation and report writing skills, in addition to knowledge of and communication tools such as Desktop Publishing, Graphics Software, Presentations, and Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Business Management, International Relations, PR and Communications or any other related field;
  • 1-3 years’ experience in resource mobilization.
