The hospital was started in 1909 by the Church of Scotland. It is owned and governed by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. It is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya between the Aberdares Range and Mount Kenya 130 Km (80 Miles) North of Nairobi at an altitude of 5,900ft. It is a 203-bed hospital and provides holistic health care. Though located in a Kikuyu speaking people, the language of work is English and Swahili since not all staff are Kikuyu and from time to time it receives visitors from overseas. Medical students from abroad get their medical electives at the Hospital.
It
provides general health care in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and
gynecology as well as outpatient services.

hospital has a Nursing School which is training Kenya Registered Community
Health Nurses. Other units are the Guest House and a Cafeteria.
Theatre nurse
Responsibilities:
·
Assessing patient’s status, reviewing
charts/file, identifying patient and verifying surgical site upon arrival from
the ward
·
Take measures to ensure the patient’s
comfort and provision of psychological support to the patient
·
Participate in packaging,
Sterilization, and dispatching of theatre consumables
·
Managing and Communicating patient’s
emotional status to other appropriate theatre team members
·
Maintaining the aseptic /safe
controlled environment
·
Managing human resources, equipment,
and supplies for individualized patient care
·
Receiving patients from the ward,
confirming the theatre list and handing over patients once stable enough to be
in the ward
·
Managing patient flow in theatre
Department
·
Participating in surgical procedures
as a scrub nurse
·
Transferring the patient to operating
room table, Participate in Positioning the patient on the operating table and
to the recovery area after the operation
·
Ensures that the sponge, needle, and
instrument counts are correct before and after the procedure
·
Institute measures to promote normal
body temperature of the patient during operation e.g. providing warm
intravenous fluids
·
Determine patient’s immediate
response to surgical intervention by doing the assessment
·
Maintain patient’s safety (airway,
circulation, and prevention of injury)
·
Administer medications, fluid, and
blood if Prescribed
·
Managing of consumable and consumable
surgical supplies
·
Timely reporting of any
malfunctioning pieces of equipment for repair
·
Ensuring all patients are charged in
relation to the procedure performed and consumable supplies used e.g. drugs
·
Monitoring of blood/fluid loss during
operation
·
Communicating intraoperative
information to the respective ward staff including the type of surgery
performed and anesthetic used
·
Report the patient’s response to surgical
procedure and anesthesia.
·
Describe intraoperative factors e.g.,
insertion of drains, administration of blood, analgesic agents, or other
medications during surgery and occurrence of unexpected events
·
Taking vital observations
before/after surgery and reporting any changes in the patient’s vital signs
·
Communicating with relevant parties
e.g. anesthetists, Surgeons and MO’s
·
Assisting anesthetists during
induction
·
Ensuring theatre equipment are in
good working condition
·
Documenting any events during surgery
·
Receiving and taking care of newborns
during cesarean section
·
Any other duties that may be
allocated by the Management

nurse
Responsibilities:

Nephrology Nurse
Responsibilities:

Organizing for and coordinating

Pharmaceutical
technologists
Responsibilities:
·
Helps patients by greeting them in
person and by phone; answering questions and requests; dispensing medicine.
·
Maintains pharmacy inventory by
checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed
medications and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt;
removing outdated drugs & preparing aging reports as often as possible.
·
Maintains a safe and clean
environment by complying with company standard operating procedures &
government regulation. He/she cleans the floors and damp dust the shelves.
·
Protects patients and employees by
adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
·
Organizes medications for dispensing
by reading medication orders and prescriptions; preparing labels; calculating
quantities; assembling intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical
therapies.
·
Maintains records by recording and
filing physicians’ orders and prescriptions.
·
Generates revenues by calculating,
recording, and issuing charges as well as issuing cash sale receipts.
·
Ensures medication availability by delivering
medications to patients and other clientele.
·
Prepares reports by collecting and
summarizing information and sending them on time as required in the standard
operating procedures.
·
Contributes to team effort by
accomplishing related results as needed.
·
Conducting marketing activities
together with the branch team and ensuring individual and branch sales targets
are met/or exceeded.
·
Take responsibility for his/her shop
by ensuring that all operations of the shop are running smoothly and reporting
any anomalies and breakages.

Orthopaedic
surgeon
Responsibilities:
·
Undertaking general diagnosis, care,
treatment and rehabilitation of patients

Carrying out specialized clinical

surgeries in various health facilities

Carrying out forensic and

Clinical officer

Responsibilities:
·
Manage the OPD / Emergency / Ward and
assist the medical doctors
·
Accompany medical doctors/
consultants on IPD Ward rounds

In the absence of the Consultant –
Pay timely visits to In – patients and treat the patients along the indicated
line of treatment

Conduct medical procedures under
supervision after getting the consent from the medical doctor.

Responsibilities:

Evaluating treatment outcomes for

living to prevent communicable diseases.

Maintaining information and records

Inducting students on practical

Requisitioning and ensuring
availability and proper utilization of physiotherapy supplies and equipment as
well as giving support and health education to patients and relatives in
hospital.

Coaching and mentoring of staff.
Laboratory
technologists
Responsibilities:
·
Examine body fluids and tissues for
abnormal chemical levels, cells or bacteria.
·
Prepare tissue for microscopic
examination by pathologists.
·
Determine blood type for
transfusions.
·
Conduct medical research and analyses.
·
Operates and maintains sophisticated
instruments and equipment used in the division, is able to properly set up,
calibrate, maintain, operate and shut down such instruments.
·
Maintains competence in Laboratory
Information System that is crucial to the quality operations of the laboratory
and patient care.
·
Actively participates in Quality
Improvement Programs essential to ensure that laboratory testing is accurate,
timely and meets customer needs.
·
Trains and orientates new Medical
Laboratory Technologists in the performance and interpretation of tests.
