Massive Recruitment of Field Interviewers in Kenya

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led, Africa-based and Africa-oriented international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

 

Rationale and Purpose of the Assignment


APHRC is accepting applications for both Qualitative and Quantitative Field Interviewers for its AfriFOODlinks Project. The project will be carrying out a mixed methods cross-sectional study involving collection of both quantitative and qualitative data in Kisumu in the course of October and November 2023. The main aim is to improve food environments for urban consumers, schools, and food retailers in Kisumu through real-world experimentation, as urban food environments are a critical arena for improving nutrition and reducing environmental impact in African cities.

 

Data collection purpose

  • To collect high-quality data that addresses research questions ethically and within stipulated period.

 

Scope of the work

Children aged 3-5 years and their caregivers, community members and leaders, community organized groups, food vendors, County officials, Public health officers, 4K club school patrons, and agricultural extension officers will be the data collection's participants. The data will be gathered in Kisumu in Nyalenda and Manyatta.

 

Anticipated Timeline

The proposed data collection is scheduled to begin in mid-October and end in mid-November 2023.

 

QUALITATIVE FIELD INTERVIEWERS

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Recruitment of participants using pre-defined eligibility criteria.
  2. Obtain and document informed consent/assent from the study participants prior to the interviews.
  3. Moderate/ facilitate qualitative interviews and stakeholder workshops with various people at the national, subnational, community, market and school level.
  4. Take notes and compile comprehensive qualitative interview debriefing notes.
  5. Prepare data collection progress report and updates.
  6. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor and project manager.

 

Minimum qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition, Social Sciences or Health related fields.
  2. Have proven experience and skills in qualitative research methods (conducting FGDs, IDIs and/or KIIs).
  3. Ability to facilitate and moderate group discussions in English and Swahili.
  4. Have experience in note taking during qualitative interviews.
  5. Have proven experience in qualitative data collection in low-income settings.
  6. Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  7. Residents of Nyalenda or Manyatta (or areas close to the sites) will have an added advantage.
  8. Be available to work full time on the project for the duration of the study.

 

QUANTITATIVE FIELD INTERVIEWERS

Duties and responsibilities:

 

  1. Identify and recruit participants based on pre-defined eligibility criteria.
  2. Conduct quantitative data collection in the assigned study sites.
  3. Complete, edit and submit all assigned interviews for crosschecking and verification by the team leader on a daily basis.
  4. Review the collected data to ensure all questions are complete prior to online submission.
  5. Follow-up with participants for missing responses or correct any inaccurate responses.
  6. Ensure the safety of all assigned study tools and equipment.
  7. Fill in daily progress reports/timesheets.
  8. Participate in weekly team meetings.
  9. Assist the research team in other project-related activities.
  10. Any other related activity assigned by the supervisor, project manager and principal investigator.

 

Minimum qualifications

  1. Have completed secondary education and possess a minimum grade C Plain in KCSE.
  2. Have proven experience in quantitative data collection in low-income settings.
  3. Experience in public health and or nutrition surveys.
  4. Proficient in Microsoft office applications.
  5. Have experience in using electronic data capture methods like digital recorders and survey CTO or open data kit (ODK).
  6. Preferably a resident of Nyalenda or Manyatta the study sites or has knowledge of the study sites.
  7. Fluent in English and Kiswahili (verbal and written).
  8. Be prepared to work full time on the project for the duration of the study.

 

The candidates should be:

  1. Residents of the study area listed above: Kisumu (Area of residence should be clearly indicated in the cover letter).
  2. Be prepared to work full time on the project for the duration of the data collection.
  3. Flexible and available to work odd hours (when necessary), under minimal supervision.
