Communication Consultant
Duties and
Responsibilities
Organization
Setting:
UN Environment is the leading global
environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the
coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable
development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative
advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the
development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment
under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and
the international community for action. UN Environment Ecosystems Division
works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance
and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and
strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and
countries with economies in transition.
UNEP acted as the Chair of the Task
Force for the UN Food Systems Summit which aimed to transform and leverage all
levels of the food system to support Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
As part of the UN Food Systems Summit, the True Value of Food Coalition (http://teebweb.org/our-work/agrifood/food-systems-summit/)
aims to bring the economic value provided by nature to the forefront of
decision-making.
The Economics of Nature Unit (TEN) in
the Ecosystems Division in UNEP hosts the Economics of Ecosystems and
Biodiversity for Agriculture and Food initiative (henceforth ‘TEEBAgriFood’).
TEEBAgriFood has developed a Framework to apply True Cost/True Value
Accounting. The Framework applies a multiple-capitals approach to assess and
then value the full range of externalities, impacts and dependencies across the
full agri-food value chain. Assessments compare potential policy scenarios with
the Business-as-Usual counterfactual, therein demonstrating the economic
benefits of selecting the former over the latter.
TEEBAgriFood Framework applications
have been applied by UNEP and other entities in over a dozen countries. UNEP
aims to upscale the adoption and application of the TEEBAgriFood Framework. As
such, UNEP is developing guidance manuals and web-based material to assist
Member States that may be considering the application of TEEBAgriFood to
develop the economic evidence to support pro-nature, pro-climate mitigation and
pro-pollution reduction policy interventions.
The current consultancy is to provide
communications inputs to support this upscaling of TEEBAgriFood activities. The
consultant will report to the Head of the Economics of Nature Unit (TEN) in the
Ecosystems Division.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities of the consultant will
