International Labor Law Counsel

About the Role:

BURN is looking for an International Labor Law Counsel who will have the following duties and responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide counsel to HR, local management, and supervisors on handling employee relations matters, including employee hiring, counseling, discipline, pay, and benefits issues.
  • Drafting Employment contracts for various markets in line with Burn’s policies and updating the same to ensure compliance with the Law and policies.
  • Partnering with the HR team to proactively develop HR Policies, processes, and initiatives that minimize legal risk and help create a positive workplace culture.
  • Prepares, directs, and conducts training programs on employee relations matters; e.g. employment law updates, disciplinary matters, investigative techniques, and documentation preparation.
  • Lead or provide advice and mentorship on internal investigations. Recommends and helps implement appropriate actions.

  • Identifying and assessing labor law risks and mitigation measures
  • Remaining current on emergent labor and employment law developments in our different markets and advising on the impact on the Company and implementing any necessary changes.
  • Representing and advising the HR team and team leaders on employee relations matters, performance management, employee separations, redundancies, and unfair employment practices.

Skills and Experience:

  • Have 5+ years of experience practicing labor and employment law at a multinational company or law firm.
  • Have or be a licensed lawyer to practice in any of the above markets.
  • Have working knowledge of Sub-Saharan Africa Labour and Employment Laws specifically Ghana, Nigeria, DRC, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania.
  • Have strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience conducting labor and employment-related investigations.
  • Experience with employee benefits and compensation plans.
  • Have experience managing outside counsel.
  • Proven experience in resolving international legal issues across borders and multi-jurisdictions.
  • A team player capable of working independently on multiple issues in a fast-paced environment, multicultural environment while maintaining an emphasis on the overall corporate mission, policies, and goals.
  • Bilingual (English and French or Portuguese preferred).
