External Relations & Communications Manager

MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

Overview:

The role holder will be responsible for overseeing external Relations and Communications strategies and implementation including managing all external communication stakeholders, developing, and managing content in all media and company channels and distributing all external messaging about the Company Corporate brand. He/she will be responsible for developing and implementing a framework of partnerships that aligns the shared objectives of corporate activities, the Unilever sustainability, growth, and reputational issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead to develop effective external communication procedures and policies for various situations or crises
  • Develop content strategies, manage content planning, and execution of corporate content externally including Public Relations and speaking, and any external messaging about company
  • Ensure communications consistency among different stakeholders and across channels
  • Managing external communication channels and press relations to secure and grow media online and offline coverage
  • Design and implement effective digital communication strategies across available channels to uplift the corporate brand and drive thought leadership.
  • Perform communications research and monitor the progress of various communications strategies

  • Develop materials to educate employees on external communication practices and collaboration with Internal Communication Lead & Legal/Marketing Teams to ensure relevant external stories are cascaded.
  • Achieve consistent positive media coverage for Unilever Corporate Brand in Kenya and Uganda
  • Proactively Identify, develop, and pitch content from the business, functions to communicate externally to augment impactful storytelling.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for external stakeholder engagements and ensure consistent representation in all external forums strategically beneficial to both Kenya and Uganda commercial agenda.
  • Consistently amplify externally Unilever’s Sustainability and Society impact agenda through community investment initiatives
  • Anticipate, identify, and support mitigation of issues that may impact the company – internally and externally
  • Lead on the professional crisis Management as Co-lead Member of External Crisis Management Team
  • Support the Functional Leader to oversee and allocate the annual External communications budget and ensure its use is fully maximized
  • Any other related responsibility or project lead roles that will be assigned to the role holder from time by the management.
  • Key interfaces:
  • Internal – Business leader across all functions/countries, supporting expertise teams across all functions / countries
  • External – 3rd party comms agencies, Suppliers for External events, Industry peer expertise for benchmarks etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Media Studies, PR or Journalism, Business, Marketing, Arts and Social Sciences
  • At least 5+ years relevant experience in Corporate Communications & External Affairs in a reputable organization.
  • Experience or knowledge of Third-party Media Agency management – brief concisely to get the best out of Agencies
  • Proactive Social Media Channel Management – Familiarity with website, search, email, thought leadership and social media best practices.
  • Purposeful Brand Management & Corporate Sustainability
  • Ability to articulate Company’s position and strategy around priority issues both internally and externally in a compelling way.
  • Exceptional communication abilities, including writing, High editorial skills, speaking and active listening and influencing
  • Ability to effectively engage with team members of all levels and across departments
  • Demonstrated ability to use data insights to shape strategy, creative briefs, and content
  • Highly proficient in graphic design tools i.e., Canva
  • Great project management skills, including time management, goal setting, multitasking and prioritization
