Field Research Internship
The general purpose of the
CRS internship program is to provide learning opportunities to young Kenyan
graduates while creating a pool of employable persons for both short- and
long-term humanitarian aid and development-related careers.
The internship programme
applies to graduates who have completed studies in the relevant field of study
within the last two years and willing to commit to the program for six months.
CRS is therefore currently seeking Interns who have a strong interest in gaining participatory research (technical & field) experience in the development context as it relates to the Kenyan ASALs. The interns would be engaged in supporting the implementation of a one-year mixed methods action research study, “Understanding the Potential of Conditional Cash Transfers in Addressing Acute Malnutrition.” to inform the potential of conditional cash transfer in alleviating acute malnutrition in Isiolo and Marsabit. The interns will support the implementation of the study. S/he would be involved in the support of various aspects of the research study including data collection (quantitative & qualitative) training of enumerators, data analysis and quality assurance at multiple levels.
Clear internship
objectives will be developed at the beginning of the internship period,
assessed, and monitored on a regular basis, and final appraisal conducted at
the end of the internship period to ensure that the intern achieves their
learning and development objectives.
Responsibilities
- Support
the Research & Design Manager and Research Associate in implementing
the study as needed
- Support
the Research & Design Manager and Research Associate in recruitment
and training of enumerators including piloting data collection tools
- Support
quality assurance during data collection including data verification,
validation and review of collected data to ensure all questions are
completed prior to online submission. (May support with data cleaning)
- Recruit/identify
knowledgeable qualitative data collection participants using a set of
defined eligibility criteria
- Engage
in secondary data collection and qualitative data collection including
observations, KIIs and FGDs. Support in taking detailed notes at key KIIs
and FGDs with identified stakeholders.
- Support
the Research Associate in the supervision and management of the field team
and data collection activities
- Support
the Research Associate to provide field logistics to ensure that the field
research teams are adequately facilitated working closely with research
& design team, Caritas-Marsabit & Isiolo and Head of Offices.
- Engage
in daily and weekly debriefs during data collection with the Research
Associate and Research & Design Manager
- Work
with Nawiri field teams to ensure effective community mobilization for the
relevant stakeholders across the county and sub county level.
- Work
in close collaboration with the Field offices, Monitoring and evaluation,
Accountability & Learning and other technical field teams
- Keep
all documents and information related to CRS’ program activities,
personnel and development plans confidential.
- Adhere
to CRS’ principles of confidentiality in relations to staff, partners,
vendors and other stakeholders. Report to the management potential
irregularities or any misbehavior that occurs
- Be
flexible to undertake any other roles as assigned.
Key Working Relationships:
- Internal: Nawiri
Research & Design Manager, Research Associate, County Head of
offices, Nawiri program team, Local health facilities, data enumerators
- External: Consortium
partners, health facilities, government bodies at different levels,
Qualifications
- BA
or B.Sc. degree in social sciences, nutrition or health related graduate
within the past 2 years and a strong interest in research.
- 2
years previous field data collection an advantage
- Strong
knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Knowledge of statistical
c & qualitative analysis concepts and processes is a plus
- Experience
with field data collection applications e.g CommCare a plus
- Excellent
communication skills and ability to work well in community setting.
- Familiarity
with Isiolo and Marsabit County and local communities an asset
- Commitment
