To provide, deliver training to meet the service driving policy. To ensure that the statutory and operational requirements for safe competent drivers are met. To assess driving standards and to provide appropriate feedback to develop driver skills throughout the service to enhance a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans, lesson notes and mark registers.
  • Instruct students on theoretical content as per lesson notes.
  • Guide learners in safely carrying out practical sessions.
  • Inspect instructional vehicles for readiness of use for each session.
  • In line with service schedule, facilitate inspection of vehicles and mechanical service and repairs to ensure they are ready for use; maintain proper records of the same for each vehicle.

  • Respond to both technical and administrative queries from staff and students. 
  • Ensure all safety protocols are always observed both in class and outside.
  • Participate in exam administration including invigilation, supervision, marking and filing as per approved procedures.
  • Provide psychosocial support to students to enhance overall mental, spiritual and emotional health.
  • Merchandising of the institute’s promotional material when working in the field.
  • To provide expert knowledge, advice and support to others within the service or the external parties regarding the service and ensure the provision of specialist services in line with service needs.
  • Guide students through the new NTSA guidelines and curriculum.
  • To provide defensive driving training to staff and students in driving disciplines as detailed in the training policy and to meet legislative needs.
  • To design and maintain up-to-date driver course materials and assessments
  • To establish and maintain effective record keeping regarding driving competence to provide accurate individual and service records.
  • To seek opportunities to improve delivery methods and to optimize the student learning experience to ensure that time is used effectively and learning is understood and applied in a working environment.

Responsibility for Physical Assets

  • Responsible for the departmental training materials e.g. driving vehicles.
  • Responsible for working tools and learning materials – both theory and practical materials/equipment.
  • Responsible for proper working conditions of roads and other areas used for practical sessions both inside and outside the institute.
  • Responsible for environment care within the institute (jointly with other stakeholders).

Decision Making/Job Influence

  • Managerial decisions – on day-to-day planning and use of resources
  • Analytical decisions – reviewing and interpreting data and information and options to inform decision-making and the execution of responsibilities
  • Operational decisions – for day-to-day staff work performance

Key Qualification

  • Degree or Diploma in education or any related field from a recognized institution in Kenya
  • At least 5 years’ work experience in teaching at tertiary level and a minimum of 1
  • year at HoD level or equivalent 
  • Qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Qualified assessor or equivalent. 
  • Qualified Emergency Response Driving Instructor with a minimum 3years experience
  • Experience of working as an Emergency Response driver in an Emergency service.
  • Approved driver and vehicle standards Agency Instructor.
  • Computer literacy 
  • Budgeting skills
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of profession/regulatory standards 
  • Able to effectively train
  • Assess and Communication with students
  • Able to design and produce quality training materials
  • Able to prioritise and plan effectively
  • Ability to work in changing environment
