The International Livestock Research
Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Senior Gender Scientist – Strategic
Research to contribute to ILRI’s gender team by leading areas of change in
gender and livestock. The position will focus on delivering evidence and
interventions to partners and policymakers to enable positive outcomes for
livestock keepers and owners.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and
reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and
sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres
dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world.
Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and
projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern

Responsibilities
Research development and support
- Develop
and lead emerging research themes on gender and livestock by producing
high-quality evidence, research and approaches to be taken up by partners
and policymakers;
- Provide
guidance to ILRI and partners, including by being proactive in providing
options and opportunities for ILRI to integrate gender strategic research
within its research;
- Coordinate
and lead engagement with partners and policymakers;
- Critically
review gender research outputs to ensure that they are of the highest
quality, meet international standards and are impact oriented;
- Contribute
to and lead preparation of submissions for research proposals; and
- Coordinate
and supervise research assistants and consultants working on these topics.
Outreach
- Publish
scientific papers and communicate with the scientific community;
- Use
multimedia and social media for outreach to the general public;
- Participate
in national and global events related to gender and livestock; and
- Work
with ILRI’s communications team to support communicating new knowledge.
Qualifications
- A
PhD in a social science (geography, anthropology, sociology, development
studies, economics, political economy) or substantial and long-term
development experience on relevant topics; and
- At
least eight years of experience in managing research or research-for-development
projects in developing countries and supporting gender-sensitive,
inclusive and pro-poor objectives in agriculture and natural resource
management.
- A
proven ability to provide innovative thinking within gender and
agriculture, a willingness to work with biophysical scientists and proven
ability to apply methods and approaches to achieve effective integration
of gender within ILRI’s livestock mandate;
- Excellent
interpersonal skills and experience with working in multidisciplinary and
multicultural environments in relevant geographies;
- A
track record of peer-reviewed publications;
- Ability
to work collaboratively and undertake fieldwork;
- Fluency
in written and spoken English.
- On-the-ground
experience in South Asia, sub-Saharan African and/or Southeast Asia;
- Networks
in research, including at the grassroots level in Africa and/or Asia; and
- Experience
in fundraising.

a graphic recorder (cartoonist) and whiteboard animator to document several
2-day workshops focusing on visioning and development pathways for sustainable
livestock systems under the Program for Climate Smart Livestock Systems. These
workshops will be taking place through 2020 in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Responsibilities
The graphic recorder/whiteboard animator (consultant) will be
expected to document the process over the 2 days of each workshop, in
conjunction with the lead facilitator, and to provide high quality physical and
digital images within one week of each event. It is also preferable if the
graphic recorder were able to develop a whiteboard video from their drawings,
but if not, it is expected that they would work in conjunction with a
whiteboard video designer to develop a video of the process and outcome.
The consultant would be expected to be there for the duration of
the workshops and preferably also the day before each workshop for a briefing.
There will also be a series of calls with the project team in the lead up to
the event and potentially a face-to-face meeting depending on travel costs.

Qualifications
- Experience
in documenting complex workshop processes that involve groupwork
- Fluency
in English and preferably an ability to communicate in
kiSwahili/Amharic/Luganda
- Willingness
to work together with the convening and facilitation team to see how best
to capture the events
- Willingness
to travel to workshop locations in Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda
- Ability
to make a whiteboard video from the images generated during the process
- It
is preferable that the graphics recorder be the same individual as the
whiteboard animator, although individuals with either skill are welcome to

and carry out field research in the programme’s target countries, by
utilising a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods

to the implementation, reporting and communication (using a variety of
channels) of research on gender and livestock
- Contribute
to the development of approaches and tools for integrating gender within
ILRI
- Contribute
to the development and testing of gender and equity indicators for
monitoring and evaluating livestock research and development projects

- Lead
the preparation of draft peer reviewed articles, research reports, briefs,

Qualifications
- MSc
in a social science (geography, anthropology, sociology, development
studies, economics, political economy) with an emphasis on gender and
experience in collecting, analysing and summarizing gender research into
publications.
- Familiarity
with gender and livestock system issues and challenges
- Good
analytical skills and experience of using packages for data analysis
- Experience
in producing project reports, training manuals and peer-reviewed
publications
- Ability
to work effectively in multi-regional teams and partners with members
drawn from a diverse range of nationalities, cultures and scientific
disciplines
- Ability
to work under pressure, often to tight deadlines without compromising the
quality of deliverables
- Ability
to prioritize tasks and to work with little or no supervision
- Experience
in informal and formal capacity development of colleagues and partners
- Strong
English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in a second
language, Spanish or French, is an advantage)
- Good
