Reporting to the Assignments Editor,
the Reporter will be responsible for covering news events, writing and submitting
accurate, credible, factual and balanced newsworthy stories that conform to
journalistic ethics, editorial objectives and house style for publication
within set deadlines.
Responsibilities
·
Developing, reporting and writing
News and Feature stories for the Daily Nation in finished form, so that no
major rewrite is required or no extensive additional report is needed;
·
Attending assigned news functions,
taking notes on location, carrying out interviews, checking facts and making
audio/visual recordings as the case may be;
·
Writing News or Features at their own
initiative, choice and judgment or at the direction of either the Assignments
Editor or Head of Content;
·
Ensuring that the material written
reflects a thorough understanding of Nation’s style of journalism as defined in
the editorial policy guidelines and objectives, the house style and the
journalistic code of ethical journalism;
·
Researching and providing background
information to make stories complete;
·
Briefing the Assignments Editor on
stories gathered and writing the selected ones within set deadlines;
·
Following news leads and maintaining
close contacts with news sources;
·
Continually building his/her contacts
list and demonstrating its value with consistent exclusive reports or
information;
·
Responding promptly to news breaks;
·
Responsible for the correctness of
facts, content and style of his/her news materials;
·
Checking the written stories to
ensure that they are free from errors and libel;
·
Closely cooperating with
photographers from whom he/she orders pictures on the issues he/she covers;
·
Generating stories for use on Group
multimedia platforms;
·
Filing all elements of digital story
as per Digital First policy (alerts; social media; web story; multimedia)
within defined deadlines;
·
Adhering to the Editorial and Social
Media Policy as updated from time to time.
Qualifications
·
University degree in Communication or
its equivalent from a recognized institution;
·
Diploma in Journalism/Mass
Communication;
·
3 to 5 years relevant experience;
·
Ability to communicate both
internally and externally; and
·
Analyse and simplify complex reports
for our audiences.

Responsibilities

news stories/articles on the crime beat so that no major rewrite is required or
no extensive additional report is needed;

Maintaining crime news sources and
calling them for updates;
·
Sourcing exclusive crime stories, and
ensuring that they are factual credible, well researched, and balanced;
·
Ensuring that the stories written
conform to journalistic code of ethics and the Editorial policy guidelines and
objectives, the house style and submitting them within set deadlines;
·
Checking the written stories to
ensure that they are free from errors and libel;
·
Following news leads and developments
from published stories;
·

Editor

Reporting to the Head of Content, the
Parliamentary and Political Affairs Editor will be responsible for the
coordination and management of the coverage of parliamentary proceedings and
political events, ensuring that the team continuously generates enough quality
and strong legislative and political content that conforms to journalistic
ethics, editorial objectives and house style within set deadlines.
Responsibilities
·
Being the lead writer for the beat,
personally responsible for writing the big parliamentary and political stories,
analyses and editorials;
·
Planning the work of the political
and parliamentary teams to ensure a marketing leading flow of exclusives and
thoughtful content;
·
Taking responsibility for the quality
and quantity of the parliamentary and political content of print and digital
platforms;
·
Establishing and maintaining
relations with news sources such as legislators, political leaders and party
officials;
·
Assessing the political climate and
anticipating likely developments for coverage;
·
Briefing and guiding reporters on
coverage and writing of stories;
·
Ensuring that section reporters write
stories and deliver them within the set deadlines;
·
Reviewing the stories filed to ensure
that they meet editorial objectives, house style and journalistic ethics;
·
Working in liaison with the Head of
Content and Chief Sub Editor to choose the main parliamentary and political
stories of the day/week, writing or re-writing them;
·
Checking stories to ensure that they
are free from errors and libel;
·
Mentoring reporters, monitoring their
productivity and general content and appraising their performance;
·
Participating in product development
meetings;
·
Ensuring delivery of digital content;
and
·
Adhering to the Editorial and Social
Media Policy as updated from time to time.
Qualifications
·
Bachelor’s degree in Communication or
its equivalent from a recognized institution;
·
Diploma in Journalism;
·
Five (5) years of relevant
experience;
·
Ability to communicate both
internally and externally;
·
Ability to analyse and simplify
complex reports for our audiences;
·
Analytical skills; and
·
Ability to lead a team of
journalists.
