About Innovations for Poverty Action: Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is an international non-profit research organization dedicated to discovering and promoting effective solutions to global poverty problems.

We also mobilize and support these decision makers to use these solutions to build better programs and policies at scale.

About the Project: Development assistance tends to focus on the `external’ constraints that poor people face while largely ignoring `internal’ ones.

However social psychology suggests that poor people sense of self-efficacy and control may be beaten down by the nature of living in poverty, limiting the options they consider.

The project aims to do a randomized control trial to examine the combined effect of lifting external and internal constraints simultaneously, providing a cash transfer and an intervention to boost poor people’s sense of self-efficacy and alter their understanding of their opportunities, encouraging poor people to set and pursue their own goals without directing their choices.

The research will test if a brief, standardized psychological intervention can alter psychological outcomes and future-orientated behaviors in a developing country and examine if such interventions can enhance the already-known benefits of cash transfers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Administer surveys and interviews

· Complete scheduled activities each day in a timely manner

· Assist with data entry in the office

· Work with Senior Field Officer and Field Manager to achieve daily targets

· Establish a good relationship with local administration and respondents in the area study

· Complete other duties as assigned by Field Manager, Senior Field Officer

· Provide feedback daily on activities in the field

Qualifications and Experience

· Bachelors’ degree in social sciences, health, economics, business administration and other relevant fields

· Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, Kiswahili and Luo

· Experience with data collection, especially with surveyCTO or Open Data Kit (ODK)

· Basic computer knowledge and skills

EMERGE – Storybooks for Promoting Early

Literacy Project

In close partnership with decision makers, the policymakers, practitioners, investors and donors working with the poor around the world.

IPA designs and evaluates potential solutions to poverty problems using randomized evaluations, the most rigorous evaluation method available.

We also mobilize and support these decision makers to use these solutions to build better programs and policies at scale.

About the project: EMERGE is a randomized control trial which aims to improve early childhood literacy and school readiness. In Kenya and throughout sub-Saharan Africa, many primary school children read below grade level.

While there are many causes of low literacy in primary school, a key contributing factor to the widespread lack of literacy is low level of child readiness for primary school.

Our research focuses on an innovative, light touch early childhood intervention to improve school readiness and classroom-level pedagogy through the provision of children’s books and dialogic reading training to parents of children between 2 and 6 years of age in rural, Western Kenya.

We will work in partnership with a local NGO, Maria’s Libraries, to distribute storybooks in official and local languages.

This impact evaluation measures the impact of distributing children’s storybooks and supporting family reading on a range of child, household, and school-level outcomes.

We seek: first, to quantify the effects of inexpensive literacy interventions on learning outcomes; second, to quantify parent behavioral responses to the availability of the new educational materials; and third, measure the change in classroom environment brought about by improved student preparation before school age.

About the Position: The Field Officer, under the supervision of Senior Field Officers and Field Managers, will be primarily responsible for field data collection activities, including interviews and observations of children, mothers, and other household members.

In addition, the field officer may be involved in community entry activities, including meeting with area leaders, or participating in presenting the project and answering questions about the project at community barazas.

The Field Officer will also be expected to assist with office tasks such including translations and data entry. The Field Officer may also play a role in delivering the intervention training to caregivers and will be expected to learn and practice the training script in advance of
delivering the intervention.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Conducting surveys in EMERGE evaluation sites throughout Nyanza

· Visiting and tracking of survey respondents to administer questionnaires

· Data collection prep work, including translations, pretesting, and piloting

· Assisting with community engagement, including meeting local leaders (e.g. chiefs), and presenting and answering questions on the EMERGE project at barazas

· Assisting with intervention training delivery, including prep and practice

· Diligent completion of checklists and other means of monitoring data

· Data entry tasks as assigned by the Project Management

· Helping to have materials organized in readiness for field work and for data processing and organizing data collected from the field

· Ensuring high data quality (low error rates)

· Proper use and maintenance of project equipment (phones, GPS machines, headphones, etc.

· Prompt arrival at work and completion of scheduled activities each day

· Successfully working in a team and avoiding/minimizing conflicts with the rest of the team members

· Participating in staff trainings and making efforts to improve one’s capacity

· On non-field days, conscientious performance of office work (respondent phone calls, translations, data entry, photocopying, organizing data, etc.)

· Other tasks as assigned by Project Management

· Positive, hard-work attitude, with the aim of individually and helping the team complete the work

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

· Diploma in relevant field (social sciences, development studies, early childhood education, or community development)

· Excellent oral and written communication in both English, Kiswahili, and Dholuo;

· Excellent management and organizational skills;

· Computer literate.

· Should be willing to work on Saturday and Sunday

· Must be able to carry weight of up to 10 kilograms.

Preferred:

· Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (social sciences, development studies, early childhood education, or community development)

· Experience working with children and mothers;

· Experience with child education research, or conducting child observational measures

· Experience working on health, education, or early childhood development projects;

About the Project: AFLASAFE(Integration of small holder farmers into modern value chains with food safety standards in Kenya) is a project that is being implemented through IPA.

The project is led by researchers from International Food Policy Institute (IFPRI based in the US) and Wagengen University in the Netherlands.

The main aim of the study is to evaluate the adoption of aflatoxin reducing technologies and their impact on the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Embu Counties in Kenya.

About the Position: The Field Officer will work under the general supervision of the Senior Field Officer (and within the limits of Innovations for Poverty Action-Kenya policies and procedures) to provide data collection services for the Aflasafe project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Conduct interviews with respondents using SurveyCTO during the farmer group meetings

· Make sure the respondents understand the informed consent and get their consent before starting off with the interviews.

· Comply with survey ethics and code of conduct including confidentiality of the information received.

· Debrief with teammates after interviews

· Ensure that all survey materials especially the tablets are looked after properly

· Assist in organizing materials in readiness for field work

· Other tasks as assigned by management

· Prompt arrival at work

· Successfully working in a team and avoiding / minimizing conflicts with the rest of the team members

· Cooperation with other project partners from other organizations

Duties and Responsibilities

· Data collection management: This include supervising field officers, overseeing and monitoring data collection, planning field logistics, organizing data collected from the field, providing feedback on field operations and survey instruments and conducting back checks.

· Human resource management which includes: Assisting in training, monitoring staff attendance and updating attendance records including leave forms; enforcing all human resource policies and procedures in coordination with IPAK’s Human Resource Manager and the AFM/RA

· Operations management which includes: taking and updating inventory of all project items, participating in general procurement and logistics for the project and liaising with the operations department for necessary action

· Financial management which includes: working with IPAK financial staff to keep detailed accounts of all project activities and to monitor project field expenses.

· Communication and reporting: The Senior Field Officer will be expected to report to the AFM on field activities and work plans.

· Organization of Field Activities: this include working with the AFM to develop work schedules, supervision plans, staff trainings and debriefing with the teams after interviews.

· Ensure that all survey materials are looked after properly and returned to the AFM after the survey exercise is over. This includes the tablets.

· Other duties related to project implementation and administrative tasks as needed

· Prompt arrival at work
