Vacancies: Assistant Research Officers

Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), a State Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries was established by an Act of parliament (The Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of the Laws of Kenya of 1979) which has since been repealed by The Science, Technology and Innovation Act No.28 of 2013.
The Institute mandate is to undertake research in marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable exploitation, management and conservation of Kenya’s fisheries resources, and contribute to National strategies of food security, poverty alleviation, clean environment and creation of employment as provided for under vision 2030.

The Institute has Research Centers and Stations located at Mombasa, Kisumu, Nairobi, Naivasha, Baringo, Kegati, Sangoro, Sagana and Turkana.

KMFRI is seeking to recruit self-motivated professionals who are team players to fill the following vacant positions within its approved establishment:
 
1. Assistant Research Officer (Marine Natural Products Scientist) 

(RI.9) 

One (1) Position
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participating in problem identification;
  • Developing research concepts;
  • Designing experiments;
  • Collecting and analyzing data and preparing technical reports;
  • Provision of scientific advisory services in the area of expertise.
  • Participating in seminars and short courses on research practice.
  • Identify problems, plan and implement research projects with minimal supervision from senior Research scientists.
  • Assisting in initiation, implementation and evaluation of research projects.
  • Dissemination of research findings
  • Any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
Minimum Requirements for Appointment
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ or equivalent;
  • Bachelor of Science Degree Second Class Honors (upper division) in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Natural product, chemistry, Food science, Biotechnology or equivalent from a recognized university.
  • Must be computer literate.
2. Assistant Research Officer (Physical Oceanography) 

(RI.9)

Two (2) Positions

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participating in problem identification;
  • Developing research concepts;
  • Designing experiments;
  • Collecting and analyzing data and preparing technical reports;
  • Provision of scientific advisory services in the area of expertise;
  • Participating in seminars and short courses on research practice;
  • Identify problems, plan and implement research projects with minimal supervision from senior Research scientists;
  • Assisting in initiation, implementation and evaluation of research projects;
  • Dissemination of research findings;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
Minimum Requirements for Appointment
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ or equivalent;
  • Bachelors of Science Degree Second Class Honors (Upper division) in Physical Science, Oceanography or equivalent from a recognized university;
  • Must be computer Literate;
  • Knowledge in programming in MATLAB;
  • Knowledge of oceanographic instruments (Acoustic Current Meters, CTDs etc.) as well as oceanographic software (e.g. RDI and Nortek software) is essential;
  • Ready to work out of the office and outside normal working hours;
  • Able to work on survey vessels at sea.
3. Assistant Research Officer (Social Economist / Economist)

(RI.9)

Two (2) Positions 

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participating in problem identification;
  • Developing research concepts;
  • Designing experiments;
  • Collecting, analyzing data and preparing technical reports;
  • Participating in seminars and short courses on research practice;
  • Participate in the running of the Performance Contract Secretariat from time to time. Formulation of development strategies;
  • Identification, preparation and evaluation of development projects and monitoring of their implementation.
Minimum Requirements for Appointment
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ or equivalent;
  • Bachelors Degree Second Class Honors (Upper Division) with a specialization in Economics or Social Sciences from a recognized university or its equivalent;
  • Must be Computer literate;
  • Proven knowledge of Econometric softwares including SPSS and Stata.
4. Assistant Research Officer (Marine Geologist)

(RI.9)

One (1) Positions

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare and submit environmental permit applications and ensure permits are obtained;
  • Participate in the investigation and characterization of aquatic sediment through fieldwork;
  • Participate in the collection of underwater samples and data using specialized monitoring equipment;
  • Participate in the Analysis and documentation of all site samples and data collection;
  • Produce data reports and organize into databases;
  • Participate in aquatic dredge and disposal based on sediment characterizations;
  • Develop models and graphical representation of ocean floor observations and measurements and
  • Any other duties in the arear of specialization as assigned by the supervisor from time to time.
Minimum Requirements for Appointment
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ or equivalent;
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in geological oceanography, marine geology or equivalent field of study from a recognized university.
  • Must be Computer literate
5. Assistant Research Officer (Fish Pathologist) 

(RI.9)

One (1) Position

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assisting in conducting basic exams and evaluations;
  • Giving routine vaccinations;
  • Taking samples of blood or other bodily fluids, analyze and prepare technical reports;
  • Distributing prescription medications;
  • Observing and evaluating behavior;
  • Suturing wounds;
  • Assisting in performing surgical procedures when necessary;
  • Conducting follow-up exams after treatment,
Minimum Requirements for Appointment
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ or equivalent;
  • Bachelor of Science in Pathology or Fish Science from a recognized university or equivalent qualification;
  • Must be Computer literate.
Remuneration 

Basic Salaries per cadre will be as follows:-
  • Job Group RI.9 – Minimum KShs.35,910.00 Maximum KShs.45,880.00 pm. plus other attractive benefits.
These positions are permanent and pensionable.
