KEMRI / University of Washington: The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with the University of Washington (UW) is conducting research studies in Kenya. 

The KEMRI/UW research collaboration aims to conduct interdisciplinary, setting-specific research aimed at improving the lives of women and children living in Kenya. 

Specifically our research strives to understand various infectious diseases afflicting these populations and testing interventions.  

We are looking for motivated, committed, and honest staff members to join our team in one of our upcoming Research Studies (Building the evidence base for care of acutely ill, undernourished children in limited resource settings– cohort study)

The KEMRI / UW study projects seeks to recruit dynamic, innovative and experienced person to fill the following positions which will be based in Migori County referral hospital:

1. Study Clinical Officers (2)
 
The Study Clinical Officer will participate in pediatric research including data and sample collection. 

S/he will be expected to observe good clinical practice in carrying out duties and work as a team with other staffs.  

S/he will be reporting to the Study Coordinator or the Medical Coordinator and should be ready to carry out other duties as delegated by the Study Coordinator.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery
  • Have the necessary registration documents
  • Computer Literate
  • Three years experience working in a busy Pediatric clinic or Ward set up
  • Three years experience in Pediatric Phlebotomy
  • Good communication skills
  • Ready to work under pressure
  • Be a team player
2. Study Community Nurse (1)
 
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
 
The responsibilities of the Study Nurse will include, but not limited to the following:
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of study design and goal, and ensure that the study is conducted in compliance with study protocols and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains data collection and data quality systems in support of research protocol;
  • Support the clinical officers in clinical data collection.
  • Offering HIV testing and counseling to caregivers and children
  • Participate in following patients and home tracings.
  • Participate in weekly research team meetings.
  • Respond to questions about the study posed by participants.
  • Work in clinic as needed to collect specimens and ensure their delivery to designated facilities or persons
  • Conduct weekly inventory of relevant supplies to ensure that they are organized and in sufficient quantities for the study site
  • Perform other duties that may be given by the Study/Site Coordinator
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum Diploma in Nursing (KRCN/KRN); registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a Certificate in Counseling
  • Previous experience with clinical research
  • Three years of experience working in a busy clinic set up
Desirable Qualities
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and financial accountability.
  • Experience in participants follow-up/tracing
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience in HIV Counseling
  • Commitment to integrity and high quality performance.
  • Strong professional references from previous supervisors.
  • Above average computer applications experience and proficiency.
  • Currently reside in or be willing to relocate to the above named County
  • Exceptional eye for detail
  • Pediatric phlebotomy experience with blood culture draw
  • IMCI training
3. Study Laboratory Technologist (1)
 
The Study Lab Technologist will participate in pediatric research including data and sample collection and provide technical support to research teams in the set up of Laboratory experiments, analysis of sample / data and recording of applied processes and procedures in order to meet clinical research objectives.  

The Laboratory Technologist will also support the clinical research team enter clinical data in the database.   

S/he will be reporting to the Site Coordinator or the Medical Coordinator and should be ready to carry out other duties as delegated by the Site Coordinator.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologist Board
  • Knowledge and understanding of GCLPs and regulatory/accreditation agency requirements
  • Knowledge of laboratory Health and Safety practices
  • Computer Literacy
  • Two years experience in laboratory work
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ready to work under pressure
  • Team working and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
4. Study Counselor / Field Worker (1)
 
The Study Counselor will be responsible for guiding participants through the consent process and study procedures, offering HIV testing and counseling to caregivers and children, ensuring participants return to follow-up visits, and following up with participants who do not return. 

The counselor will also assist with miscellaneous KEMRI/UW study activities including data entry, data query response, attend trainings, weekly reporting, etc. 

Required Qualifications:
  • Certificate in counseling or similar profession
  • Three years of working experience as a counselor
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills
  • Must be able to work in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability, and integrity
  • Ability to foster trust and open-communication with study participants
  • Speaking and understanding Luo or Kuria and Swahili language
  • Basic computer skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Motorcycle riding license
  • Experience in participants follow-up/tracing
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience in HIV Counseling
  • Have worked in a Research set up
Terms of Employment: Contract for one year, as per KEMRI Scheme of Service. The successful candidate shall undergo a three (3) months probationary period for the first three months upon initiation of employment.

Study Administrative Assistant 

 (1 Position)

Key Responsibilities and Duties:


The responsibilities of the Study Admin Assistant will include, but not limited to the following:
  • Prepare monthly financial payroll reports and confirms with KEMRI salaries department.
  • Drafts employee’s staff contracts and present to Administrator for renewal on annual basis.
  • Supervises office cleaner and ensure that the office is kept in an orderly manner.
  • Manages a KEMRI/UW staff Google calendar for sick offs and annual leave days.
  • Draft personnel letters to KEMRI main and follow up on their progress at different departments.
  • Manages office pettycash account and ensure that the impress float is maintained.
  • Enter transactions into the QuickBooks and generate monthly Projects expenditure report.
  • Draft LPOs for supplies requisition
  • Prepare and send supplies to the field sites as per the weekly inventory request.
  • Maintains staff personal files and ensure their confidentiality is upheld.
  • Manages the emails and KEMRI/UW google calendar.
  • Arranges necessary travel reservations, airport pickups and itineraries.
  • Performs other tasks involved in conducting the study as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum Diploma in Business Administration or related courses
  • Previous experience in Administration
  • One years of experience working in a busy office set up
