Career Opportunities in Marine Transport Industry
 
Our client, Kenya Ferry Services Limited, is a State Corporation established under the Companies Act (CAP 486) of the Laws of Kenya and operating under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, mandated with the operation of ferries in the Country. 

The Company’s headquarters are set along the expansive shores of the beautiful and splendid Indian Ocean overlooking the magnificent view of the channel at Peleleza, Likoni, Mombasa.


To strengthen the management team, KFSL is seeking to engage dynamic, highly driven and result oriented individuals for the following key positions:
 
Managing Director 

Ref: MD/05/2016
 
Reporting to the Board, the Managing Director will be responsible for overseeing all the strategic, operational and financial performance of the company through the effective management of executive leadership team.

Key roles and Responsibilities
  • Developing, recommending to the Board, and implementing the long term strategy, business plans, and annual operating budgets taking into account the national development goals and Vision 2030;
  • Establishing and implementing proper internal monitoring and control systems and procedures;
  • Overseeing financial management and investment undertakings;
  • Ensuring implementation of corporate policies and programmes;
  • Maintaining a conducive work environment and fostering a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices and good corporate citizenship;
  • Acting as the principal spokesperson of the Company by providing strategic linkages with key stakeholders of the Company; and
  • Ensuring compliance with all statutory, legal, social and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Finance / Business Administration / Commerce / Economics / Law/ Human Resource Management or related field from a recognised university;
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university will be an added advantage;
  • Must be a member of a relevant professional body;
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years’ working experience with at least five (5) years in a senior management position; and
  • Experience in the marine transport industry or marine operations management will be an added advantage.
This appointment is for 3 years contract terms renewable subject to good performance.
 
Operations Manager – OM/05/2016
 
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring safe, secure, efficient and quality service standards of ferry operations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Developing departmental policies and work instructions;
  • Developing and implementing the departmental budget;
  • Preparing and coordinating operational schedules and procedures;
  • Observing and monitoring the safety and security of ferry operations as per the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code;
  • Preparing and presenting regular operational and performance reports; and
  • Conducting training based on a quarterly training needs assessment for the department.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Logistics / Transport Economics / Marine Transport/ Marine Operations Management or equivalent in a related field from a recognized university;
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university will be an added advantage;
  • Must be a member of a relevant professional body;
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years’ working experience with at least three (3) years in a relevant senior management position; and
  • Advanced training in professional marine transport/ or marine operations management will be an added advantage.
This appointment shall be on permanent and pensionable terms.

Chief Engineer – CE/05/2016
 
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Chief Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of efficient and effective technical engineering services to the Company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Developing, managing and monitoring the department budget;
  • Ensuring that best engineering standards and practices are upheld;
  • Maintaining adequate and up to date records of drawings, plans and alterations for projects undertaken;
  • Directing and overseeing the specialized installation of parts, plants and equipment;
  • Advising management on technical matters and providing leadership in formulation of equipment replacement programmes; and
  • Ensuring statutory regulations and insurance requirements are followed, for the safe condition of ferries, plants, gear and equipment.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent in a related field from a recognized university;
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university will be an added advantage;
  • A Marine Engineering Class 1 certificate or equivalent;
  • Must be a member of a relevant professional body;
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years’ working experience with at least three (3) years in a relevant senior management position; and
  • Experience in the marine transport industry/ or marine operations management will be an added advantage.
This appointment shall be on permanent and pensionable terms.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and should submit among other documents; Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations; Clearance Certifi cate from the Higher Education Loans Board; Tax Compliance Certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority; Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission; and Report from an Approved Credit Reference Bureau.
