Job Title: Senior Accountant
 
Our client, a well-known company in the logistics industry in Kenya is looking for experienced, results-oriented and energetic individuals for the following position:
 
Job Summary: The job holder shall play a central role of ensuring the integrity of accounting information by researching Finance issues for compliance and by establishing quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.

Main Duties
 


The following duties and responsibilities are attributed to this position:
  • Ensuring compliance with corporate, finance and accounting policies, business controls, procedures and reporting
  • Providing sound business decision-making support to other senior members of the organization through the accurate monitoring, reporting and analyzing of financial results and projections
  • Providing timely proactive financial evaluation, information and advice that enables the Company operations to develop and facilitates the execution of effective plans and the taking of informed decisions
  • Interacting with and providing support to personnel in other departments so as to ensure seamless resolution of issues
  • Preparing annual financial accounts, in compliance with local Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • Preparing monthly management accounts and reviewing support schedules
  • Monitoring and analyzing financial reports and records and pro-actively identifying issues and initiating corrective actions where needed
  • Reconciling company assets and analysis of utilization
  • Preparation of debtor’s reports
  • Trucking income Variance analysis and explanations
  • Preparation of creditor’s reports
  • Maintaining adequate systems of internal controls needed to safeguard assets, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with policies and procedures
  • Negotiating exchange rates with various banks
  • Preparation of supplier payments and reconciliations
  • Ensuring accurate calculation, payment and submission of company statutory deductions in a timely manner and as per the relevant legislation
  • Ensuring withholding tax is properly calculated and remitted on behalf of third parties
  • Coordinating, preparing and submitting statutory returns and payments
  • Managing and reviewing audits of VAT returns and subsequent refund claims from URA as per the VAT Act
  • Exercising sound management and leadership skills and principles
  • Ensuring a strong focus on people development and continuously developing potential of staff through training and mentoring
  • Monitoring the productivity and effectiveness of direct reports
  • Keeping staff informed and assisting them when required
  • Developing and maintaining liaison with tax advisors and government officials
  • Providing internal and external auditors with all assistance as required
  • Any other duties as may be allocated from time to time
Academic & Professional Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance/Business or equivalent
  • Full ACCA/CIMA/CPA (K) CA/ACA/equivalent qualification
  • Membership to recognized professional accounting body
Skills & Work Experience 
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience in the Clearing and Forwarding industrty
  • Working knowledge of information systems / accounting software (ideally ERP)
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of Packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Knowledge of financial control and cost accounting practices, including preparation of management accounts, budgets, reconciliations
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team working skills
  • Ability to set up systems and internal controls
  • Flexibility to travel to subsidiary/other locations on assignment
